Mauricio Pochettino: "It’s going to be an amazing challenge because we’re going to be facing a team that’s trying to break into the top four. They’re a great side and they’re having a great end to the season as well, but we’re going to try and dominate the game and to win the game with a very good performance against them. I fully admire Roberto Martinez and I admire his career and everything he’s been doing especially now at Everton and it’s going to be very good on Saturday."
Despite seemingly having little to play for, there is hope for Saints fans if stats are anything to go by. They have only lost one of their last 12 home league clashes with the Toffees (W6 D5).
Roberto Martinez: You don’t get a situation where you don’t have anything to play for. You have players fighting for individual situations, contracts and futures. And as a team if they can finish above Newcastle then that is a remarkable season so you learn very quickly in this league that having nothing to play for doesn’t exist for any team. So we go to Southampton, who might have that relaxed mentality, which will help them perform well. We don’t expect anything but a strong performance."
Everton are the form horses going into today’s match as they chase fourth in the Premier League. They have won eight of their last nine Barclays Premier League games (losing once – 2-3 v Crystal Palace). They are unbeaten in eight Barclays Premier League meetings with the Saints, winning four and drawing four.
Jay Rodriguez remains sidelined for Southampton, while Morgan Schneiderlin received a heavy knock to his quadriceps on Thursday and is out of the game. Kelvin Davis, Maya Yoshida, and Gaston Ramirez are also out. Sylvain Distin misses out with a hamstring injury with fellow centre-back Phil Jagielka still a week away from returning from a similar problem. It means John Stones and Antolin Alcaraz will be central defensive partners. Forward Kevin Mirallas (groin) is out for the season.
