Lionel Messi won the 46th trophy of his career as Inter Miami clinched the MLS Supporters’ Shield for the first time with victory over Columbus Crew.
Messi scored twice and Luis Suarez added another as Inter Miami beat Columbus 3-2.
The win sees Miami move to 68 points from 32 games, securing them the Supporters’ Shield, which goes to the team with the best regular-season record.
It is Miami’s first MLS trophy since starting out in the league in 2020.
"I am happy, happy that we did it,” Messi told Apple TV.
“At the beginning of the year we knew that this was a group to fight for this. We took charge from the beginning, we had the players to do this. I am happy to secure the first objective, and we're thinking of the next."
The next target for Messi and Miami will be the MLS Cup.
By winning the Supporters’ Shield, Miami have ensured they will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, which culminate with the MLS Cup.
“We have a nice opportunity to go down in history, and now we think about what is coming,” added Messi.
“We have a great advantage in that we play all the games at home, which was what we were looking for. I think that we are very, very strong at home.”
Before the playoffs, Miami could break the MLS record for most points in a season if they win their remaining two matches.
The current record is held by New England Revolution, who hit 73 points in 2021.
Miami have hit new heights this season despite missing Messi for 15 matches either due to injury or international duty.
“Throughout the year we had many, many injuries, where we couldn’t all be together,” said Messi.
“But the group was getting the most out of every tough game.”
Messi also gave credit to head coach Gerardo Martino, who is in his first season in charge of Miami.
“The philosophy was clear: we wanted to keep the ball and attack our opponents that way. Some more important players arrived and we grew beyond just how we played.
“It was our mentality. We had a lot of injuries this season and we couldn’t stay together as a team very often. Even when we were at the Copa America, the team earned positive results against some good teams.”
