Rodriguez swings a freekick into the penalty from the left side, but Varane and Ramos get in each other's way and between the two of them they manage to head the ball over the bar.

This is a big chance for Illarramendi, who with the arrival of Kroos and Rodriguez over the summer has seen his first team opportunities cut. He won't get many chances this season. He needs to take them.

In other news, Ronaldo has too much gel in his hair tonight.

First sight of goal for the home side, with Ronaldo along the edge of the penalty area before poking it through to Kroos. But the German midfielder pings his shot wide of the target. That was flying.

Of course, Real Madrid come into this game on the back of two big results. First there was the 5-1 win over Basel in the Champions League, followed by the astonishing 8-2 win over Deportivo at the weekend.

Navas makes his first save as a Real Madrid player. It's not particularly confident one, palming away a fairly tame effort at his near post, but there no doubt a few nerves affecting his play there.

The Real Madrid right back is shown the game's first booking for bringing down an Elche player as he surged through on goal. I think it was Victor who hit the turf after the challenge.

YELLOW CARD: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

At 29 years old Ronaldo is actually the oldest player in the Real Madrid starting lineup tonight. That maybe gives us an idea of how Ancelotti has rejuvenated his side over the summer.

Elche also have something to prove tonight. They have only taken four points from their first four games and suffered a disappointing defeat to Eibar in their last game.

It's only the fifth game of the new Liga season, but this is already a big game for Real Madrid. They need to close that six point gap on Barcelona. Anything less than a win tonight will not do.

Ancelotti has opted for something of an experimental side tonight. He has handed a debut to Navas, with Illarramendi starting in the centre of midfield. Isco is also in the lineup.

Real Madrid can close the gap on Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a win tonight, although their Catalan rivals play tomorrow night. The gap already stands at six points after just four games.

Ancelotti is making full use of his squad tonight against Elche. Illarramendi starts in the centre of midfield, with Isco also handed a place in the starting lineup.

So Navas gets his first start in a competitive game as a Real Madrid player. Many expect that the Costa Rican will eventually become the first team keeper under Ancelotti. Will that shift start tonight?
