It's still possible that Atletico Madrid could catch Real Madrid, with Simeone's side just four points short of the Galacticos with this win. But Simeone insists it's about securing third place.

Griezmann has been a huge success for Atletico Madrid this season. The Frenchman has eight goals in his last five Liga games, and has given Simeone the goalscoring frontman he needed after Diego Costa's exit.

With this game now lost Elche manager Escriba is now using the opportunity to give a number of young players some valuable experience at the Vicente Calderon. Arques comes on for his debut.

The away side are enjoying a decent spell of possession, as Atletico Madrid stand off and pack the backline with bodies. The La Liga champions are excellent at seeing out matches.

This result will take Atletico Madrid seven points clear of the chasing Valencia, although Simeone's side hold a game in hand over the team in pursuit of that third place position in La Liga.

Griezmann made the goalscoring impact with a well-taken double, but I still think Koke has been the most impressive player on the pitch. He did what was needed by taking a grip of the midfield.

Oblak doesn't quite all the way to a bouncing corner kick delivery, and has to make a stop at his near post after getting himself into something of a pickle. He made up for it though.

That seems to happen quite a lot. Every time Griezmann grabs a double (which he does fairly regularly) he is taken off and wrapped in cotton wool. Tough luck if the Frenchman wanted the match ball!

Griezmann applied the finishing touch but that goal was all about th perseverance of Saul, who just wouldn't give up the ball inside the Elche penalty area. He made about three tackles before squaring for the finish.

Saul was taken off by Simeone at half-time of the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday, so the young midfielder has something of a point to prove in these final 15 minutes.

Gamez needed to make that interception! Jonathas as drifting in at the back post and would hae latched on to the flicked on header, but the Atletico full-back prevented him from causing any real danger.
