I doubt nobody runs farther in the Atletico team than Costa. He seems to be everyone all at once and is a real pest for opposition defenders. You can see why he's one of the most in demand players in Europe.

Every so often you think Atletico are going to put the foot down and find that opener but there's been no real flow to the game so far and Espanyol will be quite pleased about that.

Espanyol might not have the quality of their opposition tonight but their fight is to be admired. They're giving Atletico everything they've got when it comes to effort and won't go away easily.

YELLOW CARD: Javi Lopez (Espanyol)

Atletico Madrid are cranking up the pressure ahead of half time. Can they find an opener before the break? They do it so often, as they demonstrated against Real Madrid a couple weeks ago.

Costa is over on the touchline changing his boots. Does he feel he could have stayed on his feet for that penalty incident with different studs on? Are they his shooting boots?

Espanyol have a chance to get a good delivery into the Atletico penalty area but Simao overhits the delivery and it's a waste from the away team. That was a decent opportunity to create a chance.

Costa is still complaining to the referee about the decision not to award him a penalty kick a a few minutes ago. It wouldn't be Costa if he wasn't complaining about something.

Replays show that although there wasn't much contact between the two players Fuentes certainly impeded the Atletico striker. Anywhere else on the pitch, that's a foul. Or at least that's how the cliche goes.

Big shouts for an Atletico Madrid penalty kick! Costa is played through, but just when he looks set to pull the trigger he is bundled over by Fuentes. However the referee waves away the claims.

Casilla pulls off a fantastic save to deny Luis from close range but the flag was up so it wouldn't have counted anyway. Replays show the Brazilian left back probably was just offside as the ball was played through.

Gabi is fouled by Sanchez in the centre of the pitch. That was slightly lucky. Not sure that was a foul.

At times this has been quite an open game, with Espanyol looking to spring forward on the break, but at other times Atletico have locked down possession and pick away at the opposition backline.

Very close from Costa! The Brazilian born striker loses his marker at the near post to meet a cross from the left wing, but he puts his glancing header across the face of goal and just past the target.

That will give Aguirre some encourgement. After a spell of Atletico domination Espanyol now look more assured and have a goal threat as well. They're causing the home side at least some problems.

Courtois makes a good save to stop Espanyol from taking the lead. Garcia turned just inside the box and shot at goal, but it took a deflection off Alderweireld on its way through. The keeper did well to shift his feet and save.

Costa is being his usual confrontational self. He's snapping at the heels of Colotto, conceding the freekick and making a pest of himself.

Almost a magnificent goal! Sosa drives a cross to the edge of te box where Gabi is waiting for the ball but his smashes his volley over the bar. That was rehearsed and would have been incredible had it come off.

Sanchez gets a talking to from the referee after flying into a tackle on Juanfran. He's lucky to escape a yellow card for that. It was late and could have hurt the Atletico Madrid right back.

The home side are in control of this game at the moment. Espanyol are struggling to keep the ball and their pressing has also dropped off in the last few minutes or so. They're sinking deeper and deeper.

Good save by Casilla! Sosa whips a great freekick delivery into the penalty area, with Villa meeting the ball at the near post with a glancing header. However, the Espanyol keeper is good enough to turn it round the post.
