WELBECK'S DEBUT GOAL HELPS BLUES THROUGH
Danny Welbeck scored on his debut for Chelsea as Xabi Alonso's side downed a gallant Luton side at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea dominated from the opening whistle, with the forward line of Estevao, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers -behind Welbeck - playing some exhilarating football but fine defending and goalkeeping from Josh Keeley kept the Hatters competitive for most of the match.
The first half saw Keeley deny Palmer and Reece James and Rogers hit the bar with a volley, but the deadlock was broken when Welbeck, playing for his seventh club at the age of 35, leapt to head home a fine cross from Malo Gusto.
Palmer also hit the bar in the second half, but although there was little to do for Mike Penders - keeping the spot between the sticks warm for new signing Emi Martinez - Luton remained in the game.
The tie was put beyond doubt when Estevao turned outside Joe Johnson and shot towards the far post where Hakeem Odoffin, attempting to clear, kicked into his own net.
The Blues will face Leeds in the third round in the week commencing September 7.

Both sides come out of the game with credit. Luton for their whole-hearted display and signs of quality belying their League-One status, plus Chelsea for not losing faith in their flamboyant attacking style despite being held out for over half the game.

LOVELY BALL FROM BARCO
He finds Acheampong running behind the defence with a cross-field ball but the defender heads wide of the goal. In any case the flag, correctly, went up for offside.

GOAL! CHELSEA (ESTEVAO) 2-0 LUTON
Palmer plays in Estevao on the right flank and he goes outside Johnston and strikes a ball towards the far post which Odoffin tries to clear but puts in his own net. The goal may well be given to the unfortunate Luton defender.
