Sevilla 4-1 Barcelona result – Barca rue missed Robert Lewandowski penalty as hosts go on to take crushing victory despite Marcus Rashford goal

Sevilla humbled Barcelona, beating them for the first time in 10 years, and consigning them to defeat in La Liga for the first time this season.

The hosts dominated the opening stages of the game and deserved more reward than Alexis Sanchez’s 13th-minute penalty, with Isaac Romero particularly guilty of failing to convert chances. 

The striker finally did double his side’s lead nine minutes before the break, but a fantastic Marcus Rashford volley from Pedri’s cross on the stroke of half-time flattered the Catalan side at the interval.

The game was far more even after the break and when Rashford was brought down just after the hour mark it looked like the score would be levelled, only for Robert Lewandowski to hit his penalty wide.

As Barcelona pushed for an equaliser they were twice punished on the break as Jose Angel Carmona and Akor Adams finished with aplomb to send most of the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan into delirium.

Barcelona are now a point behind Real Madrid at the summit of the table, while Sevilla moved up to fourth.

That is how you end a ten-year winless streak.

On the break, Ejuke rolls across a perfect ball for Adams who slides home coolly.

A straight red card after taking down Eric with a rash tackle. A cynical foul to end the move would have been fine but no need for studs in the challenge.

Carmona raced into the Barcelona half and it looked like he should have crossed for Adams at the back post but, perhaps worrying he was offside, the full-back kept the ball and then drilled a low shot inside the far corner.

Adams slots the ball home with panache after receiving a cross-field pass. But then the flag goes up. Replays show there wasn't much in it though.

He is punished for elbowing Carmona.

He is cautioned for felling Pedri.

He latches onto Lewandowski's flick and beats the last man but, despite having time to line up his shot, he shoots straight at the Sevilla stopper.

But Vlachodimos is always confident the ball would fly over the bar.

It was the usual slow, stuttering run up but he put the ball wide of the goalkeeper's right-hand post.

Rashford is brought down by Januzaj

Janujaz comes on for Vargas and Peque replaces Mendy.

And Vlachodimos was taking no chances double-fisting the ball away.

But his header is comfortably saved by Vlachodimos.
