Real Madrid put in a blunt display as they stumbled to a 0-0 draw at home to Rayo Vallecano, losing ground in the title race to shock La Liga leaders Girona in the process.

The hosts huffed and puffed in the first half, but found a stubborn defence in their way and were limited to only a handful of chances, the best of which fell to Federico Valverde and Joselu, who both had efforts saved.

That trend continued after the break, when Los Blancos dominated possession, but could not get the likes of Joselu and Vinicius Junior involved in the game.

Rodrygo was introduced as the match wore on, and he slid one shot wide of the far post and had another clever flick saved in injury time, but generally Carlo Ancelotti’s side found no way around a defence who marshalled their 18-yard box superbly.

At the other end, Kepa was a passenger, not having a single save to make, but the worry will be that Real were so poor in attack, with even Jude Bellingham failing to pop up with a late winner - as he so often has this season.

As I said pre-match, these teams are both pretty strong at the back, and that remains. No team has conceded fewer goals than Real Madrid's eight goals, while Rayo Vallecano have only been breached three times in their away league games, again, a best for the division

Real Madrid have lost ground in the race of the La Liga title, sitting two points behind shock leaders Girona. Rayo Vallecano meanwhile lie in ninth place, three points off the European places

de Thomas says he "congratulates his teammates" after a "really complete performance." You'd argue it was far from 'complete', given they offered nothing going forward, but they should be proud of their defensive efforts

And there goes the final whistle! A point apiece, and a result which surely suits the visitors more than the hosts! It was backs to the wall stuff for Rayo Vallecano, but the game plan works perfectly

A clash between Florian Lejeune and Antonio Rudiger results in both players getting booked. The latter will now serve a one match ban

This will be a remarkable result for Rayo Vallecano if they hold on. They've offered nothing going forward but have been watertight at the back

The hosts are regularly picking up possession around the edge of the area, but they just don't seem to be making the right choice with their final pass. Carvajal has one opportunity to find Bellingham in space, but instead sends a cross into the middle which hits the first man and is cleared
