Football news - Capello: Messi and Ronaldo 'disrespected' football by snubbing awards
ByTNT Sports
Former England and Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello has slammed Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for snubbing the FIFA Best awards.
With Real Madrid and Croatia playmaker Modric winning the best player gong to end Messi and Ronaldo's decade-long duopoly, the evening presented the chance for the pair to pay tribute to a fresh winner.
But neither man could be bothered making the journey to London or send a video message congratulating Modric on his success.
Kaka was the last man outwith Messi or Ronaldo to win the top award in 2007. Capello made his comments after Modric admitted he would have preferred them to attend the ceremony.
“Ronaldo and Messi’s absence is disrespectful to their fellow players, to FIFA, and to the football world,” said Capello on Television Espanola.
“Maybe they have won too much and have too great a dislike of losing.
"In life, you have to know how to win and lose."
