The other Group G fixture saw Montenegro claim a 1-0 win at home to Switzerland, who now top the table.
Wales had the chances and will feel they should have got more from the game. Better finishing on another night and could have easily been a different story. Credit to Bulgaria whos strong start to the second half and the classy finish from Popov proved decisive. Bryan Flynn will have food for thought and will hope to iron out the problems in time for when they face the Swiss on Tuesday night.
Wales are still waiting for their first point of the qualifying campaign. There was little in the game, but Bulgaria's impressive defending and Popov's fine strike proved the difference.
