Stuttgart 0-1 Celtic result (4-2 agg) - McCowan goal and Sinisalo saves earn Bhoys first victory in Germany but Europa League journey ends

Luke McCowan's rapid goal after just 28 seconds inspired Celtic to a narrow 1-0 triumph away to Stuttgart, earning the Bhoys a first-ever victory in Germany.

McCowan, who latched onto a Junior Adamu pass to curl clinically into the bottom left corner, breathed some belief into Celtic as they attempted to overturn the 4-1 deficit suffered in Glasgow last week.

But Martin O'Neill's side were unable to build any real momentum from McCowan's goal as they registered just two more shots throughout the rest of the game, only one of which was on target.

Although Stuttgart - 4-2 victors on aggregate - are the side to progress to the Europa League round of 16, the travelling Celtic faithful had plenty to cheer as they saw their side see out the win on the night.

Heaps of credit must go to goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, in for a surprise start instead of the experienced Kasper Schmeichel. The Aston Villa academy product made six saves in total to preserve a precious clean sheet.

Before Sunday's Old Firm clash at Rangers, Sinisalo has certainly given O'Neill something to ponder as the Finland international stakes a claim for the first-choice goalkeeper spot at Celtic Park.

Celtic goalscorer Luke McCowan tells TNT Sports: "The captain [Callum McGregor] is always inspiring us with his words in the huddle.

"We knew we had to start quick and I just wish we could have pushed on, in the first half especially, to get a second one. Just that final edge was what we were missing.

"It was just about doing ourselves proud. Even the last game we played, we didn't do that.

"We stepped into a game like this, on the biggest stage, and the message was to do yourselves and your family proud."

Viljami Sinisalo impressed with six saves tonight but Joe Hart reckons Kasper Schmeichel will return to the Celtic XI for this weekend's Old Firm derby clash at Rangers.

Hart told TNT Sports: "I think Martin O'Neill will still intend to play Kasper Schmeichel in the Old Firm this weekend.

"He's got so much experience and so much quality, but there is no escaping the fact Sinisalo has had an excellent night. He's made some good saves, been good in the air.

"It's been a seamless performance. Schmeichel has had some difficult moments but in the big games, you tend to go with the tried and tested."

Celtic may be out of the Europa League, but they have made history in winning a match in Germany for the very first time in their history.

Before tonight, the Bhoys had played 16, drawn four and lost 12 in these parts.

Had Undav's goal counted, it would have felt very harsh on Celtic, as the man who set up the striker - Ermedin Demirovic - ran back on prematurely after receiving treatment for a head injury.

Joe Hart's assessment, live on TNT Sports: "You can't let him on there, it's an unfair advantage [allowing Demirovic back on].

"Celtic have got every right to be angry. It's bad officiating from the fourth official, you can't let him back on there. It's such an unfair advantage.

"It's the right decision [in the end]. Whether common sense prevailed, or if it was actually offside, I'm not sure. It felt wrong, it didn't feel right so I'm glad he's offside if I'm honest."

That's it, Stuttgart are through to the Europa League last 16!

Celtic will be proud to have become only the second team this season to win away at Stuttgart - after Bayern Munich in December - but last week's 4-1 defeat in Glasgow proved too difficult to overturn.

Martin O'Neill's side are out of Europe. Now the full focus is on the Scottish Premiership and on regaining their Scottish Cup crown.

Into five minutes of stoppage time and Celtic are unable to craft anything else of note, let alone score two more goals.

Out of nowhere, Celtic counter as it's two-on-two with Iheanacho progressing.

The Nigerian combines with fellow substitute Tounekti, whose shot is saved.

Tounekti needed to do better with that. His shot was tame.

The home side are not only keeping Celtic at bay, but they are probably the more likely team to score in the closing exchanges.

Stuttgart are pushing for a goal to put this tie to bed.

For a fourth time tonight, Sinisalo makes a big save for Celtic.

The Finnish goalkeeper reacts quickly to deny Ramon Hendriks.

Murray tracks back to make a massive block, denying Undav an otherwise certain goal at the near post.

Undav had a tap-in, but Murray timed his challenge perfectly.

Wow, it's been ruled out!

Celtic have a lifeline as VAR intervenes, spotting that Demirovic was in fact offside in the build-up.

It looked on second viewing that he was being played on by Celtic's Dane Murray, but the line-drawers disagree.

Back to 1-0 to Celtic and 4-2 on aggregate.

Tie over.

Celtic's already near-impossible task becomes effectively insurmountable as Deniz Undav strikes with power under Sinisalo to make it 1-1.

Stuttgart now lead 5-2 on aggregate with 15 minutes to go.

The faint hope Celtic felt after McCowan's rapid opener has been gradually fading away and it's now fairly non-existent.

Still two goals down on aggregate (4-2) and with Stuttgart well in control, it would take quite something for Martin O'Neill's side to force extra time.

Yet another change to bring you, as Ramon Hendriks trots on for Luca Jaquez.

Joe Hart was impressed by the linesman for spotting that tight Fuhrich offside.

Hart told TNT Sports: "It's just offside. Good decision from the linesman.

"It's a good lesson to anyone young watching as you have to continue playing to the whistle and not switch off. Fuhrich was allowed to cut back inside."

McCowan looks gutted to be replaced by Sebastian Tounekti, but he's ran his socks off and doesn't have much left to give.

Meanwhile, Celtic's sole scorer from the first leg, Benjamin Nygren, is on in place of Hyun-jun Yang.

Chris Fuhrich wheels away in celebration as he cuts in from the left and drills the ball hard and low into the bottom right-hand corner.

But the Frankfurt impact substitute was narrowly offside. That's a let-off for Celtic.

Sinisalo gets down low at his near post to stop a stinging Bouanani effort.

That was travelling with some pace, so Sinisalo had to make use of his rapid reflexes to stop it nestling in the net.

One of Stuttgart's star men, Angelo Stiller, heads on for the final half an hour. The Germany international was benched as he took a knock at the weekend.

Striker Ermedin Demirovic is also on. Chema Andres and Tiago Tomas are the pair replaced.
