SPOT OF BOTHER FOR VILLA AS GO AHEAD EAGLES CLAIM MEMORABLE WIN

Aston Villa's UEFA Europa League campaign hit its first major roadblock as Unai Emery's men surrendered a 1-0 lead and missed a penalty as they lost 2-1 at Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles.

Evann Guessand gave the visitors the ideal start as he tapped home in the fourth minute following good work down the left flank from Jadon Sancho.

Villa's early pressure continued as the Premier League side threatened to add to their lead. But a combination of wasteful finishing and smart goalkeeping from Eagles' stopper Jari De Busser.

After a host of chances came and went, Go Ahead Eagles punished Villa for operating a high defensive line as Belgian midfielder Mathis Suray crept in behind the Villa defence unnoticed, pulled the ball down and fired into the net, via a wicked deflection, two minutes before half-time.

The goal galvanised the hosts, who came out for the second half with more belief that a huge result was a possibility. And, after weathering some more Villa pressure at the start of the half, Eagles started to put the visiting defence under pressure once again.

On the 61-minute mark, Villa's high line cost them dear once again as Eagles' full-back Mats Deijl sneaked in to poke a deep cross beyond Emi Martinez and send the home fans into a frenzy.

Emery responded with a quadruple change, and while the introductions of Matty Cash and Morgan Rogers provided more impetus and quality down the right flank in particular, there was nobody in a Villa shirt on the end of their delivery from wide areas as De Busser was left largely untested in the second period.

But, as the minutes counted down, Villa continued to press and, after Dean James was penalised for handball, Villa had a golden opportunity to draw level from the spot. But, after taking his time to compose himself in the high winds and driving rain, Emiliano Buendia stepped up and blasted his penalty high into the stand.

That miss, along with the countless chances missed in the first half, eventually proved Villa's undoing as the hosts claimed a famous win on a memorable European night for the Dutch club.

They had to [do better]. Buendia had a great game, but the finish for the penalty, leaning back slightly so the ball goes over the bar. A really big miss for Villa. A draw would have been good for them moving forward. They'll be disappointed with that. A bad miss.

An absolutely massive result for Go Ahead Eagles, who fell behind early and had to batten down the hatches to survive a host of Aston Villa chances before scoring either side of half-time to stun one of the favourites to win the competition.

For Villa, meanwhile, they'll wonder how they ended up with nothing from the game after missing a host of chances, including a second-half penalty. But their scoring touch deserted the Villans, as the Eagles soared at home.
