Olympiacos survive late Hammers fightback to win 2-1 in Piraeus
Kostas Fortounis popped up in the 33rd minute with a moment of magic. The Olympiacos captain picked the ball up in a central position, turned away from a couple of West Ham bodies before firing an effort past Alphonse Areola from around 25 yards out.
Olympiacos continued to push, sensing they could get a second before half time and they did exactly that thanks to a large slice of luck. Rodinei fired in a hopeful ball from the right-hand side and Angelo Ogbonna got his clearance all wrong, slicing the ball into the back of the net past Areola.
The Hammers continued to struggle to find their rhythm, and the more they pushed forward in search of pulling one back the more susceptible they looked to conceding a third.
Sotiris Alexandropoulos had a big chance to make it 3-0 with 10 minutes to go, finding space in the box before firing a vicious effort on target which was saved well by Areola.
Lucas Paqueta halved the deficit for his side after 86 minutes, smashing home a terrific strike on the volley but it was too little too late for the Hammers.
UP NEXT IN GROUP A
Despite defeat tonight in Piraeus, West Ham are still very much in control of their own fate with three games left to play. The Hammers welcome Olympiacos to London in their next Europa League match on November 9th and will be looking to avenge their defeat tonight.
West Ham United
'IT WAS TOO LITTLE TOO LATE'
Former Hammer and TNT Sports Pundit Carlton Cole said he was thinking it was 'too little too late' when Lucas Paqueta's goal went in and it definitely was, but laments that it took so long for West Ham to display a bit of 'stardust' that they needed tonight.
A HUGE BOOST FOR OLYMPIACOS
Olympiacos have put an end to West Ham United's 17-match unbeaten run in European competition and grabbed themselves their first point of this UEFA Europa League group stage campaign.
The result has taken Olympiacos to four points, two points behind Freiburg and West Ham.
