Switzerland 1-2 Norway recap – Hegerberg and own goal completes comeback as Euro 2025 hosts falter at first hurdle

It could have been a very different end to host nation Switzerland’s opening fixture, having dominated play in the first half.

Though their quality in the final third was patchy, the underdogs in this fixture took the lead in the 28th minute after Nadine Riesen found the net.

Norway equalised when captain Ada Hegerberg headed the ball in the net at close range in the 54th minute with a wild 20 minutes following.

There was heartbreak for Julia Stierli shortly thereafter when an attempt to clear the ball saw her gift Norway the lead.

Norway looked like they would seal the deal as Hegerberg stepped up for a penalty, but she sent the ball wide, giving the hosts hope.

Indeed, they would have hoped to equalise with their own penalty just moments later after Harviken was initially thought to have fouled Riesen in the box, but was given a reprieve by VAR.

Despite their best efforts, Switzerland could not claw anything back, despite some decent chances for Geraldine Reuteler, and in the end it was Norway who took the three points to top Group A.

Switzerland will no doubt feel hard done by with that result, having dominated the first half so resolutely, but they’ll take no points this evening. Norway didn’t do anything very special, but they are the ones who leave with three points, putting them top of Group A – for now. Switzerland lag in third place, but anything could happen in their remaining two group matches.

A sad end to what could have been a great opener for host nation Switzerland as Norway claim 2-1 victory.

Vallotto picks up a yellow card in the final minute of the match, adding insult to injury.

Switzerland have had 16 attempts in this game compared to 7 by Norway, and you could forgive them for feeling they'd been done a bit dirty here.

The frustration is palpable as Reuteler once more has the opportunity to make a difference for her side with a wide open goal ahead of her. She chips it clear over the goal - will they get another chance?

Pilgrim seems to have breathed a bit of life into the Swiss side who are back on the attack. It would be great to see them claw something back and take a point from this first match, but they are running out of time, now.

Hegerberg is coming off now with Terland replacing her. Meanwhile, Bizet comes on for Maanum.

This time to Switzerland, but VAR does not agree. The penalty is overturned. It's the right decision, maybe there's a foul by Harviken on Riesen, but Switzerland on the way into the box, so it's irrelevant.

I don't know what I just saw. Ballon d'Or winner, top scorer in the Champions League, 50 goals scored for her country but Hegerberg has just missed by a country mile.

It's going badly wrong for Switzerland now as Norway are gifted a penalty.

Ivelj comes off and is replaced by Pilgrim, meanwhile Xhemali makes way for Schertenleib for Switzerland, while for Norway it’s all a bit odd, as Mjelde reluctantly leaves the pitch alongside Risa, while Harviken and Naalsund come on.

Total heartbreak for Stierli who attempts to clear the ball in front of the goal and instead slides it right on in there. It's hard to fathom how that happened, really, but it's devastating for the Swiss who peels herself back off the turf.
