SPAIN PROGRESS TO EUROS SEMI FINAL AS RESILIENT HOSTS KNOCKED OUT
Goals from Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina sent Spain through to their first European semi-final since 1997 as they beat hosts Switzerland 2-0 in Bern.
World Cup winners Spain headed into the game as favourites against the lowest ranked side left in the competition, and they would be handed an early opportunity to break the deadlock when Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey was fouled in the box by Nadine Riesen. It would be Caldentey who stepped up to see her penalty go wide of the post.
A resilient Switzerland stayed in the game until the deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute when three-time Ballon d’Or Feminin winner Aitana Bonmati threaded through substitute Del Castillo, who slotted the world champions into the lead.
Claudia Pina doubled Spain’s lead just minutes later when she stole the ball from Lia Walti, before curling a beautiful effort into the top corner, replicating her goal against Belgium in the group stages.
Spain would have a chance to go three goals to the good when Del Castillo was caught late in the box by Iman Beney, with Spain handed their second penalty of the night. Alexia Putellas stepped up, only to be denied by Livia Peng.
There would be late drama in the tie as the hosts were reduced to ten men when Salma Paralluelo was brought down by Noelle Maritz as she looked to break loose from the halfway line, with the full-time whistle coming shortly after to end Switzerland's hopes and keep the dream alive for the world champions.
Spain will face the winners of France and Germany - who play on Saturday, July 18 at 20:00 - with the semi-final taking place next Wednesday, July 23.

FULL-TIME! SPAIN 2-0 SWITZERLAND
Spain progress to the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 semi-finals after finally breaking a resilient Switzerland side.
They will play the winner of France v Germany.
Two goals, two missed penalties and a red card - it would be fair to say, there was plenty of drama within those 90 minutes.

RED CARD FOR MARITZ!
Salma Paralluelo goes to chase down the ball from the halfway line but Noelle Maritz steps in and brings her down.
The red card is shown to the Switzerland player and VAR does not intervene.

THREE MINUTES ADDED TIME
Last roll of the dice as Switzerland make a triple change with Alisha Lehmann, Riola Xhemaili and Meriame Terchoun coming on.
Whilst for Spain, Alexia Putellas is replaced by Lucia Garcia.

SAVED!
Alexia Putellas goes to the goalkeeper's left but it's saved by Livia Peng, who makes an excellent block.
What is going on with penalties in this tournament?

ANOTHER PENALTY TO SPAIN!
Del Castillo is caught late by Iman Beney. There's a late realisation from the crowd that the referee has awarded a second penalty to Spain but will there be a different outcome this time?

BOOKING FOR SWITZERLAND
Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic goes into the book for a foul on Athenea del Castillo.

DOUBLE CHANGE FOR SPAIN
Our potential matchwinner Claudia Pina sees her night come to an end with Vicky Lopez replacing her.
Whilst Salma Paralluelo replaces Esther Gonzalez.

BOOKING FOR SWITZERLAND
Lia Walti is the next name to go into the book.

GOAL! SPAIN 2-0 SWITZERLAND (PINA 71')
Spain are now in full control and booking their place in the semi-finals.
Claudia Pina nicks the ball off a white shirt and takes sight of goal from just outside the box. She curls it into the top corner and it's a lovely goal to put Spain 2-0 ahead.
Switzerland want it disallowed for the foul before Pina stole the ball, but a member of their staff is instead booked.

GOAL! SPAIN 1-0 SWITZERLAND (DEL CASTILLO 66')
But it's the other substitution that breaks the deadlock as Athenea del Castillo connects with Aitana Bonmati, with a beautifully played through ball, and taps it past Peng.
Spain take the lead with just over 20 minutes to go.

BOOKING FOR SWITZERLAND
There's no time wasting for Pilgrim as she gets stuck into the game and is booked for a foul.
63'
NO TIME TO TYPE
What an impact as almost immediately after coming on Pilgrim darts forward and takes everyone off guard.
She's able to take a shot which does wide but the offside flag goes up shortly after.
63'
SUBSTITUTION TIME!
Alayah Pilgrim replaces Noemi Ivelj, whilst Mariona Caldentey is left to dwell on that missed penalty as she's replaced by Athenea del Castillo.
62'
HOW DID THAT STAY OUT?
I need a replay of that.
A corner flies into the box and Switzerland are left doing some last ditch defending as the ball hits the woodwork before being cleared off the line and again, hitting the other post.
Eventually, there's time to breathe.
60'
GONZALEZ HEADS WIDE
Peng was absolutely scrambling but she's able to breathe a sigh of relief as she watches Esther Gonzalez's header go just wide of the post.
This has been all Spain for the last 10 minutes as they keep piling on the pressure and trying to find a weakness.
57'
PINA FIRES JUST WIDE OF THE TARGET
It would have been a great goal from Claudia Pina as she aims to curve a ball from just inside the box into the top left corner but it's just wide of the target.
54'
FRUSTRATIONS STARTING TO SHOW FROM SPAIN
There's a question how long Switzerland can keep this up so far and at the moment, they're not giving Spain a chance to act on their gameplan.
We're seeing fouls starting to rack up when the hosts are on the ball.
