Spain 5-0 Portugal result: Alexia Putellas in the goals as world champions make dream start to Women's Euro

As one of the tournament favourites, it was hard to imagine Spain would not win this opening fixture against neighbours, Portugal.

Although Portugal might not have expected the match to begin so ruthlessly as Esther Gonzalez opened scoring in the second minute.

If that looked too easy, teenager Vicky Lopez doubled the advantage just five minutes later, latching onto Mariona Caldentey’s cross.

Alexia Putellas put Spain three goals to the good, tapping in another Caldentey cross in the 41st minute, with Gonzalez bagging her second two minutes later.

Jessica Silva put in a shift for Portugal, but could not convert her efforts into anything tangible, as their counter-attack strategy failed at every turn.

They looked more solid in the second half, though it would be fair to say Spain had appeared to take their feet off the gas, having gone four goals up in the first.

But it was not over for the world champions as sub Cristina Martin-Prieto found the net during injury time.

It was perhaps unfortunate for Portugal to find themselves up against such class acts in their tournament opener, and they face Italy next.

Meanwhile, Spain showed a clear intention to bag a title that has eluded them thus far.

There's the whistle and I'm sure Portugal will be relieved. A pretty awful performance by them this evening, although they stepped up their game in the second half. Spain, on the other hand, looked unstoppable, but can they keep that up against a side with better quality? We'll find out as the tournament progresses.

It feels almost unfair, the whistle probably should have gone already, but Martin-Prieto has found the net for Spain to give them a 5-0 lead.

There's a bit of a nasty collision between Jana Fernandez and Ana Capeta as the latter falls over the former, who's been hacked down, but they'r up quickly.

Guijarro takes receipt of the ball on the far side of the goal. It's a powerful strike but it's not on target and it fizzes past the post.

Spain make another substitution as Caldentey leaves the pitch.

Ana Capeta wins a free kick for Portugal. Ana Borges sends it back to her who’s at the back post, but she can’t make the most of it, the quality just isn’t there.

Another roll of the dice for Portugal.

Putellas has had another couple of chances in the last few minutes, but they've come to nothing. I still think she could get another goal tonight.

Portugal are taking Jessica Silva off now, which I have to say has left me with zero hope of a Portugal goal, now.

Spain make two substitutions now.

Diana Silva has a chance now in front of an almost open goal, but there's nowhere near enough power on it and the goalies scoops it up with ease.

Lopez whips the ball into the box from the near corner, Putellas gets on the end of del Castilla's ball but it hits the top of the netting.

Carmona is a way out here, but decides to have a crack anyway. I mean, why not? They're not going to lose.
