With just one point between them ahead of their final Group B fixture, and early departure looked likely for both sides. It was nonetheless technically still possible for Portugal to progress, though this was a must-win match.

It would have been, in that case, a major blow to have conceded in the opening three minutes, when Tessa Wullaert opened scoring for Belgium.

Both sides looked weak, defensively, and as such both had chances, but for Portugal in particular, the quality required to convert them into tangible results fell well short.

In the second half, Portugal pressed more successfully but still failed to capitalise on chances, and it was Belgium who scored again 64 minutes in, though that was disallowed after VAR ruled a foul had been committed in the lead-up.

Twenty minutes later, and Portugal finally found the finish they needed as a cross from Kika Nazareth found Telma Encarnacao to slide it in the goal.

But Belgium were unrelenting and Amber Tysiak nudged the ball over the line in a sea of bodies, two minutes into injury time.

Improbably, this goal was also overruled by VAR, which found Tysiak to be offside, though in what probably felt like an egregious turn of events to Portugal, Janice Cayman offered her side a consolation prize in the final minute.

Both teams now leave the competition and head home, but perhaps Belgium can do so with their heads held high.

Belgium's win meant that progressing to the quarter-finals would have been impossible for Portugal, but even if they'd managed a win this evening, Spain didn't give Italy anything like the whopping they'd have needed to diminish their goal difference to the level Portugal would have needed. So that's the end of the tournament for both Portugal and Belgium, this evening.

There's the whistle, and it's all over for both teams, but at least Belgium get to save face a little with a 2-1 victory.

Jessica Silva fires the ball just wide of the net on the near side, to come SO CLOSE to an equaliser. It's not Portugal's night, and it's neither side's tournament.

It almost feels a bit egregious, this, because Belgium have scored AGAIN in the final minute of added time.

You couldn't make it up. It's not clear at all, but the goal is deemed to be offside and Belgium have a SECOND goal disallowed.

We're in the middle of six minutes of added time, by the way, while VAR checks that goal for a potential offside.

Belgium are straight onto the attack and shortly after Wullaert is denied by Morais, Tysiak is the one to get it over the line in a mass of bodies in the box.

Encarnacao runs onto a ball in from Nazareth and slides it low in the near side of the goal. A brilliant finish - the finish they've needed all match. It's almost certainly come too late for them, but it might sweeten the pill a little.

Lichtfus is taking a moment to receive some treatment while her teammates chat to their coach. I'm sure that was entirely necessary with less than five minutes remaining.

A great cross into the box there where Pinto gets her head to it, but fires it over the top.

For Belgium, Jannsens comes off, replaced by Philtjens, while Teulings makes way for Dhont. For Portugal Dolores Silva replaces Marchao.

Much like her earlier effort, Tonoba is ready for the cross in the box, it's pretty much one on one and she gets her head to it, but it hits the woodwork!

Portugal have a free kick on the edge of the box. Belgium are defending well so they need to make the most of these opportunities, but every time they fail to convert them into results. The finish isn't there.

Diana Silva makes way for Encarnacao.

I can feel the frustration of the Portuguese team. Every time they get the ball they are crowded out by yellow shirts, and when they manage to keep hold of it, there's nothing near the quality they need to equalize, at the moment.

Portugal have been given a reprieve as VAR rules there was a foul in the run up to the goal, which also now means they have a free kick on the edge of the box.

The ball is played into a wide open space in the box and Toloba runs onto it and puts it in the net.

It's too easy for Belgium to dispossess Portugal of the ball. Belgium are sitting pretty deeply, trying to protect their lead rather than build on it.

Ana Capeta's tournament is looking most likely to be over as she leaves the pitch making way for Jessica Silva.
