POLAND MAKE HISTORY WITH FIRST WIN
It was a historic night in Lucerne as already-eliminated Poland defeated Denmark 3-2 to earn their first victory at a European Championship.
The Danes should have opened the scoring nine minutes in, when Janni Thomsen ballooned over the bar from close range after meeting Pernille Harder’s cross, and that proved costly as Natalia Padilla-Bidas converted with a cool finish at the other end shortly afterwards.
The forward then turned creator, sending a wonderful floated cross to the back post, where Ewa Pajor doubled the lead with a superb header, while Padilla-Bidas and Ewelina Kamczyk, the latter of whom hit the bar, had further chances to extend the lead before the break.
Signe Bruun could have reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time, as one towering header hit the woodwork and another was tipped over the bar, and after a further two chances had gone begging in the second half, Andree Jeglertz’s side pulled one back when goalkeeper Kinga Szemik spilled a Thomsen shot into the net.
Denmark were well in the ascendancy by now and saw a Nadia Nadim strike chalked off for offside, but their momentum was quashed by substitute Martyna Wiankowska, who made it 3-1 by brilliantly finding the top corner from just inside the area.
The result meant Poland, who had never previously scored at the Euros, let alone won, grabbed third place in Group C, whereas their opponents, who pulled one back late on through Bruun’s bullet header, finished rock bottom.

WHAT IT MEANS
Both teams had already been eliminated before tonight, given they lost their opening two fixtures.
However, that does not detract from the history for Poland, in terms of their first major tournament victory, and it also means they take third place in Group C.
As for Denmark, a third successive exit at the group stage, and they leave the competition having finished without a point.

They have done it. A first win at a European Championship for Poland. They dominated the first half, but were really made to work for things after the break. In the end, they held on for a famous victory.

THE OFFSIDE DECISION
We've just seen a replay of it. Nadim was coming back from an offside position to get on the end of the initial cross into the box, which she knocked down to a team-mate. There's no debate over it when you see it back.

GOAL! POLAND 2-2 DENMARK (Nadia Nadim)
No mistake this time! Nadia Nadim, who is quitting international football after this game, tiptoes past two defenders and then slots through the goalkeeper. It's no more than Denmark deserve and they are level!
