Norway 1-2 Italy result - Cristiana Girelli's double sends Italy into the semi-finals at Euro 2025 as Ada Hegerberg rues missed penalty

Two-goal Cristiana Girelli struck a last-gasp winner as Italy stunned Norway to prevail 2-1 and reach the semi-finals at the Euros for the first time since 1997.

Andrea Soncin’s side had the better openings in the early exchanges with Arianna Caruso, Girelli and Emma Severini all going close while at the other end Signe Gaupset flashed inches wide with an audacious 45-yard lob from the right flank.

The Italians deservedly broke the deadlock on 50 minutes when Girelli touched home her 60th international goal from Sofia Cantore’s devilish cross-shot.

Ada Hegerberg then won and missed a penalty soon after but made amends when she raced on to Maren Mjelde’s pass and stabbed past a hesitant Laura Giuliani to level on 66 minutes.

Norway looked the more likely, but Italy broke forward in stoppage time and Girelli won it with a clinical far-post header.

The Italians will now meet the winner of England v Sweden in the semi-finals next Tuesday.

Speaking on BBC Sport, former Man City defender Nedum Onuoha said:

"It's absolutely incredible. It's so funny that the winning goal came at a time when they were so much on the back foot.

"What an incredible moment for them."

Former Lionesses star, Steph Houghton: "I think Italy were the better team throughout the whole game...

"This group has been progressing really nicely throughout the tournament."

She added: "For me, Italy had a clear game-plan from the start of the game to the finish...

"It's an amazing achievement. We haven't really spoken about Italy (being contenders) in this tournament."

In-keeping with the patterns of both sides in this tournament, Norway are pressing hard after coming back from a deficit while Italy have again let a lead slip.

Hegerberg hangs back to arrive on a left-wing cut back at just the right time but then blazes way over the top with a poor first-time effort.

The Norwegian talisman shrugs off that penalty miss to race on to a long ball and beat a hesitant Laura Giuliani and stab home a low effort.

Many observers on X claim Hegerberg was offside in the lead-up to that penalty being given.

It didn't appear to be checked, but Italy will feel justice has been done.
