BONMATI SCORES LATE IN EXTRA TIME AS SPAIN OVERCOME GERMANY TO PROGRESS TO FINAL
Two-time Ballon d’Or Feminin winner Aitana Bonmati scored the decisive goal as Spain booked a place in their first-ever European final, after beating Germany 1-0 in extra time.
The world champions will be given a chance to secure the quartet of accolades on Sunday when they face England in Basel, having already won the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Nations League and Olympic gold medal.
However, it was not as plain sailing despite facing a depleted German side, who had beat France on penalties to reach the semi-finals in remarkable fashion.
The resilient Germans would endure the hardship of playing the world champions as Spain dominated much of the play, but were able to ask their own questions and give themselves hope of yet another European trophy.
It was the Germans who nearly found the net inside nine minutes when Ann Katrin Berger’s goal-kick found Klara Buhl, who shot narrowly wide of the post, whilst Berger was forced once again into her heroics when she tipped over Esther Gonzalez’s effort in the 22nd minute.
Spain came close to grabbing the opener before the break when Irene Paredes’ free header was denied by the upright, whilst Berger was called into action when Gonzalez went close once again in the last piece of action in the first half.
The end-to-end action would continue for much of the second half as both sides pushed for the opener, with Germany having the best opportunity just before full-time to find the winner, both at the feet of Buhl, who first fired her set-piece narrowly wide of the post, before forcing Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll to tip over in the 95th minute.
The first 15 minutes of extra time would see the hunt for a breakthrough continue before Aitana Bonmati would go on to make history for her side in the 113th minute as Athena del Castillo stole the ball to play in Bonmati, who converted from a tight angle and break German hopes.
Spain will play England in the final of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in a bid to win their first European title.

SPAIN THROUGH TO EURO 2025 FINAL DESPITE RESILIENT GERMANY'S EFFORT
It was far from easy and straightforward as Spain progressed into the Euro 2025 final to set up a repeat of their historic 2023 Women's World Cup win against England.
A formidable German side would spoil Spain's party for most of the game as a breakthrough would fail to be found, despite a host of game-changing players on the pitch for Montse Tome's side.
And whilst the resilient eight-time champions would stay strong and even have chances to remarkably progress into the finals, it was down to the two-time Ballon d'Or Feminin winner Aitana Bonmati to save Spain's blushes and keep the European dream alive in extra time.
It will mean England will have a chance to change history after slipping to defeat in the Women's World Cup in 2023 at the hands of Spain to retain their title as European champions and deny the quartet of trophies for an in-form Spanish side.
