TEN-PLAYER GERMANY BEAT FRANCE ON PENALTIES IN EPIC QUARTER-FINAL
Germany overcame an early red card and playing more than 100 minutes with 10 players to outlast France and edge a topsy-turvy UEFA Women’s Euro quarter-final on penalties, progressing in no small part because of goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger’s heroics.
Having made a stunning save in extra time from one of her own team-mates to keep the tie level, Berger saved two spot kicks and scored one as Germany won the shoot-out 6-5, scoring six of their seven penalties.
With Germany taking first, Berger’s save from Alice Sombath in sudden death clinched it.
The tie hard started disastrously for Germany when Kathrin Hendrich was sent off in the 13th minute for pulling France captain ’s hair; Grace Geyoro scored the resulting penalty to give France the lead.
Yet Sjoeke Nusken equalised with a glancing header from a corner and that galvanised Germany, as did seeing France twice have goals ruled out for offside.
Germany could even won it in regulation time when they were gifted a penalty, but Nusken’s effort was saved, and the Chelsea midfielder also picked up a yellow card which will see her miss the semi-final.
France got worse and increasingly frustrated in extra time, though did hit the bar late on when Melvine Malard let fly from 30 yards out. Germany were playing for penalties and the strategy paid off.
World champions Spain await Germany in the semi-finals, while France’s run of 11 straight wins in all competitions has come to a halt in a fashion all too familiar to Les Bleues at major tournaments.

GERMANY WIN 6-5 ON PENALTIES
Berger is the hero as Germany advance against the odds. She made a stunning save in extra time to send the game to penalties, then saved twice in the shoot-out – and scored – to see Germany to victory.
They played more than 100 minutes with 10 players, having already lost their captain to injury earlier in the tournament, but dug in and showed remarkable resilience to frustrate a very dangerous France side.
As for France, it is more tournament heartbreak, and more shoot-out heartbreak, for a team who just cannot get over the hump at major events, despite all their talent.

FULL TIME IN EXTRA TIME: FRANCE 1-1 GERMANY
That Malard shot was almost the last kick of the game. It's still 1-1, and penalties beckon.
Germany have done brilliangkly to get here with 10 players, but have already been denied by Peyraud-Magnin once. For France, this is an immense test of character.

OFF THE BAR!
Malard is given space, lets fly from fully 30 yards and rattles the crossbar!
Berger had it covered, probably, but wow nonetheless.
