Rampant England thrash Wales to set up quarter-final against Sweden
Sarina Wiegman’s England side ran rampant in St. Gallen, putting six goals past Wales to finish second in Group D and progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Wales’ debut at a major tournament ends with three defeats from three matches.
Nine minutes into the match, England were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box after Georgia Stanway was brought down by Carrie Jones. VAR did not take long to intervene though, with the final decision being that contact was initiated inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty.
Stanway stepped up and made no mistake, rifling her effort past Olivia Clarke into the bottom left-hand corner.
Wiegman’s side doubled their lead less than 10 minutes later, capitalising on more poor defending from Wales. Rhiannon Roberts got her clearance all wrong and the effervescent Alessia Russo was able to pounce on the ball before finding Ella Toone who, after seeing her first effort blocked, made no mistake with her second bite of the cherry, firing past Clarke.
England netted their third goal inside the opening half hour to put the result beyond reasonable doubt. Lauren James released a completely untracked Toone down the right-hand side and the 25-year-old sent in a cross to the back post where Lauren Hemp was waiting to nod home.
The Lionesses were not done there however, going on to net a fourth just before half-time in similar fashion to the third. Once again, the classy James found Toone down the right-hand side. This time however, Toone’s pass found Russo who made no mistake with her finish, stroking her effort into the bottom left-hand corner.
Wales improved in the second half, particularly out of possession, affording less space for England to exploit, but it was not enough to keep The Lionesses from striking again, with substitute Beth Mead making it 5-0 after 73 minutes. Fellow substitute Aggie Beever-Jones cleverly slipped the ball into the path of Mead, who shifted the ball onto her left foot before stroking her effort past Clarke.
It was not all doom and gloom for the Wales supporters, however, with one of the biggest cheers of the night coming in the 76th minute when Hannah Cain let fly with a thunderous effort past Hannah Hampton and into the top corner. A brilliant moment for Wales on an otherwise tough night for the tournament debutants.
Beever-Jones put the icing on the cake of a superb England performance by scoring her first goal at a major international tournament. Niamh Charles got up well on the right-hand side to win her aerial duel, knocking the ball into the path of Mead, who played a great cross into the box where Beever-Jones was waiting to head home.
England finish second in Group D and will take on Sweden in the quarter-finals.

NEXT UP FOR ENGLAND
Sarina Wiegman's side will face Sweden in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women's EURO. After a disappointing start to their campaign, losing 2-1 to France, The Lionesses have now won their last two matches, scoring a combined 10 goals and conceding just one.
Their performances against both Netherlands and now Wales will have sent a message to the rest of the teams at the tournament that they are here and ready to defend their crown.
