Atletico Madrid moved into the Copa del Rey quarter finals despite suffering a late collapse at home to Las Palmas.
Diego Simeone’s side were cruising into the next competition of the competition only to lose two late goals. However, having won the first leg 2-0 last week the capital club had a cushion to fall back on, edging through 4-3 on aggregate.
Antoine Griezmann started the match and scored the opening despite appearing at the FIFA Gala in Switzerland last night, with Angel Correa partnering the Frenchman up front at the head of the Atletico Madrid attacking line.
Las Palmas created chances throughout, with Marco Livaja impressing with a double. Momo also gave the home side plenty to think about, with Jose Maria Gimenez enduring a difficult evening at the back for Atletico Madrid. Simeone’s side are capable of better, taking their eye off the ball slightly for this one.
TALKING POINT
What happened to Jose Maria Gimenez? Not so long ago Gimenez was considered one of the brightest young defenders in the European game. But he has now fallen out of favour at Atletico Madrid and has become something of a bombscare whenever he has played. That was the case against Las Palmas, with the visitors to the Vicente Calderon causing him problems throughout. What happened to the Gimenez of old?

MAN OF THE MATCH
Marko Livaja (Las Palmas): Griezmann was probably the best player on the pitch for the time that he was on, but Livaja put Atletico Madrid to the sword on more than one occasion with a performance that surely caught the eye of Simeone. He is a Simeone kind of player and one wonders what the Atleti coach thought of Livaja’s display given that he is a young, promising player who is supposedly on the market.
PLAYER RATINGS
Atletico Madrid: Moya 5, Vrsaljko 6, Gimenez 4, Godin 5, Lucas 5, Juanfran 6, Koke 6, Saul 5, Gaitan 7, Correa 7, Griezmann 7.
