What did you make of the game? Were Espanyol unlucky not to find the net? What was wrong with Real Madrid in the second half? Tweet me (@grahamruthven)!
Real Madrid can count themselves fairly lucky to take a 1-0 lead into the second leg after that second half display. Espanyol deserved something out the game and credit to Aguirre for getting his team to have a go after the break. But in the end Los Blancos' quality shone through.
FULL TIME: Espanyol 0-1 Real Madrid
Real Madrid sub: Gareth Bale OFF, Jese Rodriguez ON.
YELLOW CARD: Abraham Gonzalez (Espanyol)
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the second half.
Madness in the box! Alex arrives late at the box post to meet a deep cross on the volley but his shot is cleared off the line by Marcelo and then bounces off numerous players before being cleared!
Espanyol sub: Pizzi OFF, Christian Stuani ON.
The Real Madrid fans inside the stadium are giving the 'Viva Espana' chants an airing. You wouldn't expect any less when they're winning 1-0 in Barcelona.
Moreno makes a huge challenge to deny Marcelo in the box! Great defending! That was crucial. If Marcelo had been allowed to get he shot away he would have scored.
Real Madrid are making a bit of a hash of this. This should have been a comfortable win, especially after the first half, but they've allowed Espanyol to come back into the game and they're pressing for a leveler!
That was a massive opportunity for the home side. You just wonder how that play would have turned out had it been Garcia on the end of the pass.
WHAT. A. CHANCE! Cordoba is slotted through on goal by Garcia, and the big striker takes a great touch to take the ball away from Pepe and into a one-on-one situation with Casillas. But the keeper makes a huge save to preserve his side's lead!
YELLOW CARD: Victor Sanchez (Espanyol)
Real Madrid's defensive organisation doesn't look great at the moment. Despite being camped in their own half they afford Pizzi huge amounts of space on the left side to take down a long ball. Fortunately for them nothing comes of it.
Ancelotti looks to be playing Isco in the false nine position now.
Can Espanyol crank up the pressure one last time before full time? They've looked dangerous at times tonight but have nothing to show for their efforts. Garcia is still on the pitch, and he's been their best player.
Real Madrid sub: Karim Benzema OFF, Isco ON.
Real Madrid come surging forward on the counter attack, with Ronaldo driving down the left side. But when the ball is passed to Bale, who cuts in onto his left foot, he smashes his shot well over the bar. Disappointing.
