Real Madrid 3-2 Borussia Dortmund result: Xabi Alonso's side set up blockbuster semi-final showdown with PSG

Real Madrid will play Paris Saint-Germain in a blockbuster FIFA Club World Cup semi-final, after Kylian Mbappe's stunning acrobatic effort sealed a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund.

First-half goals from Gonzalo Garcia and Fran Garcia put Xabi Alonso's side in control at the MetLife Stadium.

Maximilian Beier gave Dortmund hope in stoppage time, but Mbappe's superb scissor-kick eventually proved crucial despite a last-gasp Serhou Guirassy penalty and Dean Huijsen red card.

Just 10 minutes had elapsed in East Rutherford when Madrid broke through. Gonzalo Garcia - starting ahead of Mbappe once again - was in the right place to steer home Arda Guler's neat cross.

It was 2-0 in the 20th minute as a neat move culminated in Trent Alexander-Arnold drilling the ball across the face of goal, and Fran Garcia arriving at the far post to apply a firm finish.

Madrid appeared to be cruising to victory until the 92nd minute, when they failed to deal with a cross and Beier drilled past Thibaut Courtois.

Nevertheless, Los Blancos restored their two-goal buffer within 60 seconds, as Guler's deep cross was brilliantly volleyed in by Mbappe.

There was time for further drama, though. Guirassy halved Dortmund's deficit again from the penalty spot after he was dragged down by Huijsen, who was shown a straight red card.

Marcel Sabitzer then almost forced extra time with a last-gasp volley that Courtois kept out to seal his side's passage into the last four.

The Bundesliga side must be sick of the sight of Los Blancos, who have now won each of the last five meetings between the teams.

They also include the 2024 Champions League final, as well as a 5-2 win from 2-0 down in the 2024/25 competition.

Madrid made a bright start and were firmly in control within the opening 20 minutes.

It looked like it would be a routine victory for Xabi Alonso's side until stoppage time, when Beier gave Dortmund hope - only for Mbappe to delight the crowd with his acrobatics to regain the two-goal buffer.

Guirassy's penalty and that late Sabitzer volley ensured a nervy finish for Madrid, but they held out to set up a blockbuster semi-final showdown with Paris Saint-Germain.

They will go into it without Huijsen following his last-gasp red card.

Dortmund launch one final attack and Couto's cross into the box is controlled and volleyed towards goal by Sabitzer.

However, Courtois produces a superb reflex save to keep it out, and the final whistle subsequently blows.

Dortmund's number nine steps up and confidently sweeps the penalty beyond Courtois, who went the right way.

That's his fourth goal of the tournament, but is it too late for his side?

Dortmund go straight down the other end, and Guirassy is dragged to ground by Huijsen.

The referee points straight to the spot and, after giving himself time to ponder, sends the defender off.

He makes his mark and puts the tie to bed in style!

Dortmund's glimmer of hope is quickly dashed, with Mbappe putting the result beyond doubt.

Arda Guler clips another superb cross to the far post, where the France skipper produces a marvelous scissor-kick that leaves Kobel no chance.

Hope for Dortmund!

As the Bundesliga side push again, Rudiger fails to clear an initial ball into the box.

It drops for Beier, who drills a low shot beyond Courtois and into the bottom corner.

As we enter stoppage time, Kobel blocks Valderde from a tight angle as Madrid look to finish with a flourish.

Arda Guler then takes aim, but his shot deflects behind.

Chukwuemeka, who replaced Duranville a few minutes ago, embarks on a late surge for Dortmund.

Drifting inside from the left, he gets a shot away, but it drifts aimlessly wide of the target.

Gonzalo Garcia - the tournament's joint-leading scorer - is also given a breather, with Rodrygo given a late run-out.

Madrid make a change at the back, with Tchouameni replaced by Asencio for the last five minutes.

Dortmund advance into the Madrid area with Beier leading the charge.

The ball almost ricochets kindly for Guirassy, but Courtois is quickly off the line to get there first.

Both sides take the opportunity to have a drink and receive further instructions from the benches.

This is probably Kovac's last chance to try and inspire his players to produce a late fightback.

Mbappe bursts into life as he cleverly gets away from Bensebaini, but Kobel is there to deny him at a tight angle.

Madrid go in search of a third goal that would almost certainly put this game beyond Dortmund.

The ball is teed up for Modric in the box, but he shoots straights at Kobel.

As things stand, we are on course to see Madrid take on Paris Saint-Germain in a mouth-watering semi-final.

That is, of course, unless Dortmund can mount a fightback here.
