PSG MAKE EARLY STATEMENT OF TITLE INTENT
Paris Saint-Germain kicked off their bid for Club World Cup glory with a thumping 4-0 victory over 10-man Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles.
Luis Enrique’s European champions dominated from the off and deservedly took the lead on 19 minutes when Fabian Ruiz fired a fine 20-yard effort into the bottom corner from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s lay-off.
The French side doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when they punished Antoine Griezmann for wasting a good opening by breaking at speed. Kvaratskhelia was once again the provider as he set up Vitinha to rifle home and leave the Spanish side with a mountain to climb following the interval.
Jan Oblak produced a stunning save to tip Kvaratskhelia’s curler on to the crossbar and deny PSG a third on 50 minutes before a VAR intervention led to the referee ruling out a Julian Alvarez goal for a foul in the build-up.
Atletico’s frustrations then boiled over as Clement Lenglet received a second yellow card for dissent while substitute Alexander Sørloth produced a miss of the tournament contender to compound their misery.
PSG rubbed further salt in the wounds courtesy of two more goals right at the death with substitutes Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-In (penalty) on target.
Next up, Atletico face Seattle Sounders on Thursday while PSG meet Botafogo on Friday (UK time).

REACTION TO PSG’S EMPHATIC WIN OVER ATLETICO MADRID
The superior player of the match, Vitinha spoke to DAZN post-match:
"It was a very good performance," he said.
"We did a very good game, it’s not easy, it’s difficult with this temperature. We did well against a very good team. We managed to control all of the game, we are happy with the result."
Asked about how the team continue to go from strength to strength, he added: "It’s confidence, the team, the coach – the toughest thing to do in football is to maintain the level and that’s what I try to do.
"It’s a very good start for the competition."
