SUPER-SUB PAULINHO FIRES PALMEIRAS INTO CLUB WORLD CUP QUARTER-FINALS
Paulinho came off the bench to fire Palmeiras into the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals with a stunning extra-time strike in a 1-0 win against fierce Brazilian rivals Botafogo in Philadelphia.
In a last-16 match played in the unforgiving baking midday sun on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field, home of NFL giants Philadelphia Eagles, Paulinho swooped to coolly pass the ball into the corner of the net in the 100th minute with the excellent Botafogo goalkeeper John finally beaten.
Palmeiras were without a win over Botafogo since 2023, a run stretching back five matches, but were worth the victory despite the best efforts of their opponents to frustrate.
Abel Ferreira's men were made to sweat late on when captain Gustavo Gomez was sent off for a second yellow card in the closing moments of extra time for dragging Arthur Cabral to the deck, but they saw out five added minutes to prompt wild scenes of jubilation among their fans.
The reward for Palmeiras is a quarter-final meeting with Chelsea or Benfica as they return to Philadelphia on Saturday.

THERE GOES THE FINAL WHISTLE!
Weverton has been booked for time-wasting, but it means nothing in the end as Palmeiras hang on to complete a 1-0 victory over Botafogo. Wild scenes of jubilation. Chelsea or Benfica await in the quarter-finals next Saturday. Was far from pretty, but they get the job done.

FRANTIC DEFENDING FROM PALMEIRAS!
Corner drops nicely to Jesus, but he swings and misses at the delivery before Weverton manages to land on the loose ball. Chaos, but Palmeiras survive.

Is there another twist in the tale? Palmeiras so close to booking their spot in next Saturday's quarter-finals against Chelsea or Benfica. Which gets going in just over an hour's time in Charlotte. Kaio sees a long-range shot deflect wide of goal. Botafogo still pressing.

FRANTIC SPELL OF BOTAFOGO ATTACKING INTENT
Throwing the kitchen sink at this since falling behind. Vitinho unmarked coming in on the blind side, but ends up prodding volley into side netting when it looked easier to score from the Álvaro Montoro cross. What a golden chance. But not taken.

WILL PALMEIRAS PLAY ON THE BREAK?
Seems to be a classic case of role reversals now due to the scoreline as Artur picks up the ball and hammers a shot a yard wide of the goal. Phew! That was a very fine effort. Botafogo not slipping quietly into the night. Or daytime sunshine.

EXCELLENT PLAY BY CORREA ON THE RUN
Botafogo having to throw caution to the wind. Some surging play takes him into the Palmeiras box. Cross is menacing, but just can't pick out Jesus. And the green shirts can clear the danger.

ARE PALMEIRAS HEADING FOR THE LAST EIGHT?
The winner of this match will face Chelsea or Benfica back in Philadelphia next Saturday. A warning early on for Palmeiras as Jesus nods over from the corner. Very decent opportunity, but not taken.

APPEALS FOR A PALMEIRAS PENALTY..
Vitinho goes to ground as he makes a challenge. Clipped his hand, but being decked helped his cause. No penalty given. Estêvão is then booked for some nonsense or other going on in the technical area.

PALMEIRAS FANS IN PARTY MOOD
No wonder. Can't say the goal wasn't coming or that it wasn't fully deserved. Have been the better side so far in this contest, and finally they have the lead to go with their pressing play.

HONEST JOHN WITH ANOTHER EXCELLENT SAVE

Such a tight contest between these Brazilian heavyweights. One mistake or a moment of magic might settle it now.
