Inter v River Plate LIVE - FIFA Club World Cup action as Inter top Group E

The match started with a frenetic tempo, with both sides looking to get the ball forward quickly, and with lots of tackles flying in.

Francesco Esposito had the first real chance of the match after 27 minutes, with Nicolo Barella pulling the ball back to the 19-year-old who looked certain to find the net, but his effort was blocked brilliantly by Lucas Martinez Quarta to keep the game goalless.

Esposito had another chance to open the scoring on the stroke of half-time, getting in front of his marker to get on the end of a brilliant Federico Dimarco cross, but could only fire his effort over the bar.

Lautaro Martinez went close to firing Inter ahead five minutes into the second half when he cleverly knocked the ball around a River defender before firing in an effort which struck the inside of the far post.

It wasn’t long before Martinez had another huge chance to give Cristian Chivu’s side the lead. This time he latched onto a through ball, shifted it onto his left foot and struck a fierce effort on target, but Franco Armani stood tall to make an excellent save.

River Plate were reduced to 10 men after 66 minutes, with Lucas Martinez Quarta given his marching orders for a last-man challenge on Henrik Mkhitaryan.

The Italian side finally found the breakthrough after 73 minutes with a brilliant goal. Substitute Petar Sucic threaded a great pass into Esposito, and the 19-year-old expertly shifted the ball onto his right foot before calmly slotting his effort past Armani and into the back of the net.

Alessandro Bastoni put the icing on the cake for Inter in stoppage time with a wonderful solo goal. The 26-year-old defender galloped forward, skipped past the challenge of two River Plate defenders before rifling a low effort underneath Armani. Just moments later, River were reduced to nine men, with Gonzalo Montiel receiving a second yellow card.

Inter will take on Fluminense in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Inter are through to the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup following a 2-0 victory in Seattle.
