Gianluigi Donnarumma revealed his "shock" after colliding with Jamal Musiala and injuring the Germany international's ankle during Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 FIFA Club World Cup victory over Bayern Munich.
The German club confirmed on Sunday that Musiala had suffered a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle, and would fly from the United States back to Germany to undergo surgery immediately.
The 22-year-old Germany international's ankle was caught in a challenge with Donnarumma on the cusp of half-time. The Italian goalkeeper was among a spate of players visibly upset by the severity of the injury, as Musiala was stretchered off and taken to hospital.
Donnarumma subsequently received criticism from Bayern shot-stopper Manuel Neuer, who said the 26-year-old’s tackle on Musiala was "reckless" and created a "risk of injuring his opponent".
However, speaking to Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, Donnarumma insisted he had "never intended" to injure Musiala.
"I am very shocked by what happened," the goalkeeper admitted. "It was certainly not my intention to hurt Musiala".

Meanwhile, Donnarumma's agent, Vincenzo Raiola, added: "It’s a matter of tenths of a second.
"It only takes a moment for the save to turn into a penalty. Gigio was the first to get to the ball and could no longer avoid the challenge.
"It’s unfair to think that he wanted to hurt Musiala, who we hope recovers as soon as possible to come back stronger than before".
Raiola continued: "He didn’t want to pretend nothing had happened. Gigio is a very sensitive boy.
"He wouldn’t have been able to stand [at] the scene and preferred to walk away to let the doctors take care of Musiala as best he could.
"Once in the dressing room, he even turned on his phone. In all the years we’ve worked together, he’s never done that.
"Usually, he turns it off an hour before kick-off to concentrate on the match and turns it back on after the game.
"This time he sent me a message to tell me he was shaken and that he hadn’t done it on purpose."
