MBAPPE'S SPOT-KICK DOUBLE FIRES 10-MAN MADRID TO VICTORY
Kylian Mbappe hit his 49th and 50th goals for Real Madrid as he scored twice from the spot to earn the La Liga giants a 2-1 victory over Marseille on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League.
In an incident-packed game at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, Mbappe was twice called upon to deliver from 12 yards as the hosts battled hard – and at times a little too hard – to claim the victory.
Madrid bossed the opening exchanges, but it was Marseille who took the lead, when Timothy Weah, on loan from Juventus, slammed home emphatically to complete a fast-break counter-attack from the visitors on 22 minutes.
That lead only lasted six minutes, as Real were awarded a spot-kick after Geoffrey Kondogbia's clumsy challenge brought down Rodrygo in the penalty area. Mbappe stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to draw the hosts level.
Real went on to dominate the rest of the half, but despite creating 18 shooting chances and hitting the target with 11 of them, they found Marseille keeper Rulli in top form as he ensured the scores were level at the break.
Rulli was in the middle of the action in the second half when, after a Madrid corner was scrambled away from goal, the Marseille stopper and Carvajal squared up to each other, with the Madridista planting a headbutt on the visiting keeper.
The incident wasn't initially spotted by the referee, but the video footage was conclusive and, after the VAR advised the official to check the pitchside screen, Carvajal – who had come on early to replace the injured Trent Alexander-Armstrong – was promptly dismissed with a straight red card.
Despite going down to 10 men, Madrid continued to look the more likely to find a winner, and after substitute Facundo Medina handled inside the box while challenging Vinicius Junior, the referee pointed to the spot for the second time.
Once again, Mbappe took the responsibility, and he smashed home the spot-kick to put Madrid ahead with less than 10 minutes to play.
Despite the numerical advantage, Marseille struggled to create chances in the closing minutes, with a half-chance for Mason Greenwood the only real opportunity for the visitors as Madrid saw out the seven minutes of stoppage time to secure the victory and get their 2025-26 UEFA Champions League campaign off to a winning start.

GREENWOOD GOES CLOSE!
Marseille have the numerical advantage, and in Mason Greenwood, they still have a very dangerous runner up front.
The former Manchester United man just made space for himself in the Madrid penalty area and stung Thibaut Courtois' palms with a well-struck effort.
Marseille will need a bit more of that if they're going to get back into this.

RULLI DENIES DIAZ!
If you had just turned on this game and knew a team was down to 10 men, you'd probably think that team was Marseille.
Another swift counter-attack sees Mbappe wriggle through two defenders to tee up Diaz, whose powerful effort is well saved (again) by the excellent Rulli.

MBAPPE SCORES AGAIN!
Two penalties, two goals for Mbappe, who smashed the ball low into the bottom corner, just beyond the dive of Rulli in the Marseille goal.
They've needed two spot-kicks to do it, but 10-man Madrid are in front with less than 10 minutes left to play.

PENALTY TO REAL MADRID!
Vinicius Junior surged into the Marseille penalty area and Medina slid in to challenge the Brazilian.
The challenge was clean, but the defender's arm struck the ball as he went to ground. The referee had a clear view of it, and immediately awarded the spot-kick.
It means 10-man Real Madrid have the chance to take the lead, and Mbappe has the ball in his hands...

CARVAJAL SENT OFF!
The video evidence was as conclusive as it gets. Carvajal headbutted Rulli and, on the advice of VAR Dennis Higler, referee Irfan Peljto has checked the footage and sent off the Real Madrid skipper.
Real will now have to play out the remaining 18 minutes, plus stoppage time, with 10 men.

CARVAJAL CLASHES WITH RULLI!
After a Real Madrid corner is scrambled clear for another corner, Carvajal squares up to Marseille keeper Rulli and, based on the replay we just saw, appeared to headbutt the visitors' stopper.
Rulli is on the deck receiving treatment while Carvajal pleads his innocence. But the TV cameras captured it all, and it seems only a matter of time before VAR advises the referee to have a look at the incident on the pitchside monitor.
