PSG 4-0 Atalanta result - Business as usual for Champions League champions as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes among the goals

Defending champions PSG got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a perfect start, as they blitzed their way to a 4-0 win over Atalanta.

It only took 150 seconds for the hosts to break the deadlock, doing so through Marquinhos, who scored when these teams last met in 2020 and repeated the trick by converting from Nuno Mendes’ ball from the left.

Marco Carnesecchi then made a pair of superb saves from Bradley Barcola and Achraf Hakimi to keep it at 1-0, before Odilon Kossounou wasted a rare glorious opening for the Goddess, leaning back and scooping well over from just inside the box.

The visitors looked to have settled, only for disaster to strike before the break when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted a wonderful solo goal after cutting inside and finding the top corner.

Things could have been even worse though, with VAR intervening to award PSG a penalty for a foul by Yunus Musah on Marquinhos, only for Carnesecchi to save Barcola’s spot kick.

The third eventually came after the break, with Mendes squeezing a low shot in at the near post, although the goalkeeper could and should have done better.

From there, PSG were on easy street, and they even added a fourth in injury time, when Goncalo Ramos profited from a terrible back-pass and dinked past Carnesecchi. 

Their next test is against Barcelona, while Atalanta entertain Club Brugge.

Early stages in the league phase, but PSG go top of the table on goal difference, which means Atalanta are also propping up the 36 clubs in the table.

There goes the full-time whistle. What a display from PSG. They missed a penalty, and forced Carnesecchi into some fine saves, but still waltzed to an incredibly comfortable victory. That's one way to kick off your defence of the Champions League title!

He's the one PSG player who hasn't really shone tonight, and there's another example of it. The forward tries to bend one into the far corner from an angle in the area, but it's an easy save for Carnesecchi. A pass might have been a better option.

We have a fourth! A poor back-pass tees up Ramos, and he delightfully dinks over Carnesecchi to make this even more comfortable.

That's a decent effort from the midfielder, from 25 yards out and at an angle, but he cannot quite test Carnesecchi

The substitute is making his UCL debut tonight, but is also making his mark. He's made his way into the box on a couple of occasions, and just bent a dangerous ball in from the right that nearly picked out a team-mate

Well, he's only been on the pitch ten minutes, but the Atalanta man must have picked up an injury, because he's replaced by Honest Ahanor.

Time and space a long way out, and a somehwat ambitious shot goes just as far off target

Turns out the offside flag was up anyway, so it wouldn't have counted, but the forward, who hasn't had the best of nights, lifts way over the bar with an early shot from outside the area

The possession stats are becoming more even now, but only because PSG are allowing Atalanta to have the ball. They are quite content for their Italian opponents to pass it around, as they know they are not really laying a glove on them.

The defender attempts a back pass without looking and Ramos runs onto it. Carrnesecchi is thankfully off his line to block the stabbed shot

Kvaratskhelia's night is over, and what a night it's been. Nuno Mendes comes off too. Ibrahim Mbaye and Zabarnyi are on.

It does feel like it's pretty much game over here. With 15 minutes to go, the winner is without doubt and both teams are just going through the motions a little bit.

The forward runs onto a ball over the top and is under big pressure from the defender. He still gets the first, but the goalkeeper is on hand to catch his stabbed effort from close range.
