Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool result –Victor Osimhen's first-half penalty condemns Arne Slot’s Reds to defeat in Istanbul

Victor Osimhen struck the winner from the spot as Galatasaray claimed a rare 1-0 UEFA Champions League victory that condemned a lacklustre Liverpool to back-to-back defeats.

The Nigerian hit-man, starting for the Istanbul outfit for the first time since sustaining an ankle injury in August, drilled home a 16th-minute penalty after Dominik Szoboszlai was harshly penalised for a foul on Baris Yilmaz.

Hugo Ekitike squandered a big chance for the visitors just prior to the opening goal with Cody Gakpo seeing a follow-up cleared off the line.

However, Liverpool generally lacked cohesion and quality in the attacking third similar to their first half performance in the Premier League loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Arne Slot turned to the benched Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak following the hour mark, but neither could inspire an upturn in fortunes.

The result means both sides have won one and lost one from their opening two Champions League Group Phase matches.

Next up, Liverpool visit Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday evening with concerns over goalkeeper Alisson and Ekitike, after both players left the field early with injuries.
