Chelsea 1-0 Benfica result – Chelsea hold on for vital win against Jose Mourinho's side in UEFA Champions League

Chelsea got their first win of their UEFA Champions League campaign in a tense game against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica.

The headline before the game was the Portuguese boss’ return to Stamford Bridge, who was hoping to beat his former side for the first time since 2010.

The hosts went in front after 18 minutes though a Richard Rios own goal. After a dangerous ball to the back post from Pedro Neto was cut back by Alejandro Garnacho, Rios did not have enough time to react and fired it into his own net.

Although they dominated possession and had more shots than their opponents, the Blues hardly threatened the Benfica goal. The best chance of the second half fell to substitute Estevao, whose header forced the Benfica keeper into a decent save.

The visitors started the game well before the goal but ultimately failed to create many threatening chances in the second half, as Chelsea also defended well as a unit.

Joao Pedro was sent off in the dying seconds of the game after a second yellow card, but it happened too late for Benfica to make the most of the numerical advantage. It was Chelsea's third red card in four games, and means that the Brazilian forward will miss Chelsea’s next UCL game against Ajax.
