ASENSIO STRIKES AGAIN AS VILLA VICTORIOUS IN BELGIUM
Aston Villa took control of their Champions League last-16 tie with Club Brugge, following a 3-1 victory in the first leg.
Unai Emery's side established a two-goal buffer at Jan Breydelstadion, where Maxim De Cuyper cancelled out Leon Bailey's earlier effort in the first half.
However, the visitors regained their lead through a Brandon Mechele own-goal, before Marco Asensio's late penalty gave them breathing space in the tie.
Villa broke the deadlock in the third minute. Tyrone Mings helped Youri Tielemans' deep free-kick into the path of Bailey, who brilliantly controlled a low volley beyond a helpless Simon Mignolet.
However, Brugge were level just nine minutes as a neat switch of play found Christos Tzolis, who teed up De Cuyper to sweep a wonderful first-time effort into Emiliano Martinez's far corner.
Both sides went close after the break. Substitute Asensio was kept out by Mignolet, while Tyrone Mings produced a wonderful goalline clearance at the other end to thwart Hans Vanaken's goalbound header.
Villa edged their noses back in front in the 82nd minute, as Mechele diverted Morgan Rogers' inviting cross beyond his own goalkeeper.
Asensio then gave them a two-goal buffer six minutes later, calmly sweeping home from the penalty spot after Tzolis felled Matty Cash in the box.

'BRUGGE GOT SUCKER-PUNCHED'
Rio Ferdinand, who won the 2007-08 Champions League with Manchester United, felt Brugge were made to pay for not capitalising when in the ascendancy.
"At this level, if you don't take those chances, you'll get punished," he said. "Club Brugge got sucker-punched."

VILLA BURY BELGIAN BLUES
Villa were back on familiar territory, having also faced Brugge here during the league phase.
Unai Emery's side endured something of a reality check that night, with Tyrone Mings' error leading to a 1-0 defeat courtesy of Hans Vanaken's converted penalty.
However, they were quick out of the blocks this time around with Leon Bailey's superb finish, though the winger's lack of defensive discipline cost his side the lead, as Maxim De Cuyper equalised.
Mings certained atoned for his mistake in the league-phase meeting, producing a magnificent goalline clearance to keep out Vanaken's header.
It proved crucial as the visitors regained the lead through Brandon Mechele's own-goal. Asensio then continued his rich vein of form from the penalty spot, with his fifth goal in four appearances giving Villa a crucial two-goal advantage in the tie.
Their victory was all the more impressive given they had lost nine of their 12 previous matches on the road.
Emery's side are in a strong position heading into next week's second leg at Villa Park.
