Aston Villa 3-2 PSG result: Villans fall just short as visitors win 5-4 on aggregate and reach UEFA Champions League semi-finals

Aston Villa scored three unanswered goals and came agonisingly close to a famous comeback, but a 3-2 win at Villa Park was not enough as they fell 4-5 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain, who progressed to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

The Villans looked dead and buried after twice getting caught on the break in the opening half-hour to trail by four goals in the tie, but roared back, first through Youri Tielemans' deflected goal before the break.

John McGinn – via another deflection – and then Ezri Konsa, following inspired Marcus Rashford wing-play, scored in two crazy second-half minutes to send Villa Park wild and seriously rattle PSG.

The hosts had chances to level it, with Konsa missing a header from close range and Marco Asensio – on loan from PSG – forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into an excellent save. PSG also squandered chances late on as the game opened up, before a goal-bound Ian Maatsen volley was dramatically blocked in the final minute of added time.

Ultimately, however, it was two sloppy goals, brilliantly taken by PSG full-backs Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi in the opening 30 minutes, which truly cost Villa a chance of advancing or at least taking the tie to extra-time.

PSG will play the winners of the tie between Arsenal and Real Madrid in the last four, having shown both defensive fragility and astonishing attacking riches over the course of this quarter-final.

"Very proud of the boys with what we've done tonight," Villa defender Ezri Konsa says.

"Obviously the two goals at the start killed us, but we showed great belief, great character, to get back into the game as we won the second leg but it wasn't enough."

The message at half-time was "we had nothing to lose", he says, and adds he scored the harder chance of two he had. One of those what-ifs which will haunt Villa, but they can take a lot from tonight.

That's it. PSG go through, ever so narrowly in the end, after Villa gave them a real scare.

Cash crossed from the right and Maatsen meets it on the volley, fully airborne. It looks to be curling in, but Pacho is there to block and is mobbed by his team-mates.

Just one minute of the added three left now. They can't get the ball near PSG's goal.

You have to say, PSG have done well to take the sting out of this game over the last 10 minutes.

Villa have three mintes to fins a goal, but the ball remains in the corner right now.

Martinez stays tall and keeps out a Doue prod from close range, but PSG have a throw-in and the ball at the right end of the pitch.

A clash of heads between Asensio and Mendes gives PSG a free kick and another chance to run down the clock.

Villa send on Barkley for Tielemans with their final roll of the dice.

Every stoppage is greeted with whistles now. Donnarumma, who has been fantastic, is in no hurry to take a goal kick here.

Doue wins a questionable free kick 30 yards from goal, taking the ball away from Tielemans who maybe got a touch. The angle is tough and Mendes hits it into the wall.

A moment of comedy as Neves collides with the referee off the ball, and both turn out to be fine.
