Arsenal 2-2 PSV Eindhoven (Agg: 9-3): Oleksandr Zinchenko and Declan Rice score as Gunners cruise into UCL quarterfinals

Arsenal completed a 9-3 aggregate win over PSV Eindhoven at the Emirates, drawing 2-2 on the night to progress to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with the minimum of fuss.

Raheem Sterling lit up the first half for The Gunners, producing two assists to set up first Oleksandr Zinchenko and then Declan Rice in a lively individual display.

Zinchenko’s opening goal was a particular highlight for Arsenal, bending a shot into the bottom corner from outside of the box against his former club.

But PSV held their own for much of the evening and equalised twice through excellent finishes from Ivan Perisic and Couhaib Driouech, earning the Dutch visitors a well-deserved draw in north London to restore some pride after the first-leg demolition.

Mikel Arteta’s side used the evening to test out some new partnerships and get some minutes into the legs of their squad players, and The Gunners will expect a far sterner test when they face the winner of the Madrid derby in the next round.

Declan Rice enjoyed himself this evening and made a point to jokingly not celebrate his first-half header after being criticised in some quarters for his reaction to scoring against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Arsenal fans were impressed by the display of Zinchenko in the centre of the park this evening, but the Ukrainian joked that the experience opened his eyes to the volume of running that the Arsenal midfielders usually do.

There were some impressive performances on the night from Arsenal - with Raheem Sterling, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Myles Lewis-Skelly among them – and the Gunners can now prepare for what promises to be a huge quarter-final against the winner of the tie between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

One last attempt from De Jong strikes the outside of the post and PSV will have to settle for a 2-2 draw at Arsenal – a brave effort given their heavy 7-1 deficit from the first leg. The travelling supporters celebrate in the corner, continuing their relentless display of support on the night. The tie finishes 9-3 on aggregate.

Sterling tracks back and makes a heavy challenge to try and end a PSV counter. He is booked for the challenge and rightly so… in fact, there may have even been a thought in the referee’s mind that it could have been red, with Sterling going in off his feet and over the ball. He will miss the next game for Arsenal in this competition.

The excellent Sterling plays a clever one-two with Odegaard before seeing a close-range shot saved by the keeper, with the ball dribbling narrowly wide. He deserves a goal for his display tonight.

Arsenal’s goalkeeper comes out to claim the ball and takes his time before clearing it, settling things down to make sure his team don’t give PSV too much momentum in these final few minutes.

A number of Arsenal fans are looking to beat the rush for the underground and are heading for the exits, applauding as they go after an entertaining performance at the Emirates. Those who turned up tonight would have arrived knowing that the result of the tie was already certain, but they’ve been treated to a decent game given the circumstances.

The tempo of the game is surprisingly high late on and Arsenal throw numbers forward, with Timber bursting into the box from right-back looking to conjure something for his side. The subs have injected some pace into the game for Arsenal, for whom Lewis-Skelly is starting to showboat in his midfield role.

Tierney, White and Zinchenko are withdrawn, and on come Odegaard, Timber and Martinelli, which suggests Arteta also really wants to win this game.

The wonderfully named Ryan Flamingo comes on for PSV, replacing Nagalo.

PSV are keeping runners high and looking to hit Arsenal on the break as space opens up in this final phase of the game. A long raking pass doesn’t quite find its target but the plan is clear.

The tie may be over, but PSV want to win this second leg and Arsenal are being to made to work this evening. It’s making for quite an interesting spectacle.

Wow, that is a lovely finish. Moroccan youth international Couhaib Driouech is played through after Arsenal give the ball away in midfield, and he unfurls a classy dinked finish to lob the onrushing Raya from outside the box. That makes it 9-3 on aggregate but 2-2 on the night, and PSV’s hopes of a win in London remain alive.

Boscagli replaces Obispo as the visitors make a change of their own.

Calafiori almost makes a phenomenal impact, bursting forward from left-back and linking up with Lewis-Skelly (who is now playing in a central role). The Italian darts into the box and shoots from angle but is denied by a smart save. What a goal that would have been, and the home fans applaud the intent.

Rice and Merino are replaced by Trossard and Calafiori for the remainder of this game.
