That defeat to Young Boys is haunting United. If the other teams beat them twice, United were always going to need a result away from home against one of the better sides, and here we are.

Shaw wins a challenge with Zappacosta, who goes down screaming. The ref stops the game, which seems unnecessary.

United have been useless these last 15 minutes.

United send on Van de Beek - they really do! - for Bruno, who's not happy and rightly so. McTominay is also replaced, by Sancho.

United force men forward but Ronaldo's square pass to Cavani goes astray, then Atalanta counter and De Gea can only shovel Zapata's shot around the post. The corner comes to nothing, but United aren't threatening an equaliser.

United have run out of ideas.

Zappacosta crosses from the right and again Zapata is up ... but Bailly does just enough to get in the road and the eventuating header is high.

Atalanta have disappeared the last few minutes very nicely, and all of a sudden Cavani gives the ball away inside his own half, Zappacosta directing a cross at the unmarked Zapata .. but again, Bailly is on-hand to intercept.

United up it, Shaw crossing from the left and Cavani moving on, Greenwood then finds Wan-Bissaka, whose shot hits Greenwood! That was a decent hit.

We've not talked about Solskjaer's future so far tonight, but this is another performance that says he's taken United as far as he can - whatever happens from here.

Slowly, United are building momentum. But Atalanta are closing off the angles well, forcing them back, and Matic is relieved when his attempted switch is intercepted but not cushioned by Muriel.
