Porto had taken the lead on the night through Tiquinho Soares, who tapped home a Moussa Marega cross, but Roma were level at the break thanks to a Daniele De Rossi penalty.
With Roma’s captain off the pitch through injury, Marega converted a fine Jesus Corona cross to make the score 3-3 on aggregate and ultimately take the game to extra time.
Edin Dzeko missed two glorious chances in extra time before Porto won the all-important penalty, with the referee deciding on second viewing that Alessandro Florenzi had pulled back a Porto man.
Telles kept his cool, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and Porto into the last eight for the first time in four years.
TALKING POINT
Porto are the team everyone will want in the quarter-finals. There were scenes of jubilation at the end and this is a great achievement for Porto, but they will have to seriously improve if they are to avoid a thrashing in the quarter-finals. This was a vulnerable Roma team - one with a terrible away record, a manager on the brink of a sacking and that saw key players depart with injuries - yet Porto only got past them by the skin of their teeth and having allowed Dzeko to great chances late on.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Moussa Marega (Porto). Instrumental in both Porto goals within the 90 minutes, he was the best player on the pitch and tireless despite his recent injury. He’s scored in six consecutive Champions League games - a great milestone - and this tie may well have been over sooner if he had been fit to play in the first leg.

KEY MOMENTS
26’ - GOAL! Porto 0-1 Roma (Tiquinho). Porto have the lead! Marega wins the ball off Manolas and that starts a Porto counter-attack that sees Corona carry the ball into the box and slip it to Marega, who squares for Tiquinho to tap in.
36’ - PENALTY! Perotti cuts into the Porto box and runs across Militao, who leaves a leg hanging and invites the Roma to go down.
37’ - GOAL! Porto 1-1 Roma (De Rossi pen). De Rossi stutters in his run-up, sees what way Casillas is leaning and slots the ball the other side. A great, cool penalty and Roma are back ahead.
52’ - GOAL! Porto 2-1 Roma (Marega). Just a few seconds after Olsen produced an impressive save, Corona whips in a splendid cross and there's nothing the goalkeeper can do as an unmarked Marega volleys in at the far post.
82’ - CHANCE! Roma are given a huge opportunity as Pepe carelessly gives the ball to Perotti, who has Zaniolo begging for a pass and unmarked, but he selfishly shoots and shoots wide.
111’ - CHANCE! What a chance - wasted! Dzeko cuts inside Felipe and has only the goalkeeper to beat, 10 yards out, but blazes over!
112’ - CHANCE! A terrible miss from Dzeko again! Cristante finds him with a lovely ball and Dzeko decides to take a touch and then chip the goalie, only to put too much loft on the ball and allow a covering defender to get back and hack clear.
115’ - PENALTY! Pereira fires a shot across the face of goal and Fernando goes down at the back post, possibly with some help, as the ball goes past. We’re heading to VAR and, after two minutes or so of deliberation, a spot-kick is given.
117’ - GOAL! Porto 3-1 Roma (Telles pen). Telles sends the goalkeeper the wrong way and Porto look to be heading to the quarter-finals.
