10-man Ajax squeeze past Union Saint-Gilloise, crowd trouble mars Fenerbahce progression over Anderlecht

Ajax had a nervy night at home to Union Saint-Gilloise, eventually advancing despite a 2-1 defeat and a red card, while Fenerbahce held off Anderlecht in Belgium. Paulo Dybala was the star of the show as Roma progressed into the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League with a win over Porto. Elsewhere, Galatasaray were dumped out of the competition after an inspiring display from AZ Alkmaar in Turkey.

Ajax lead Union Saint-Gilloise after ‘very harsh’ penalty in extra time

Ajax were reduced to 10 men early on in their 2-1 defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise, but the Dutch team squeezed past their Belgian opponents 3-2 on aggregate after extra time.
Kenneth Taylor struck the decisive penalty, three minutes into the extra half hour, after Kevin Mac Allister and Promise Akinpelu had given Saint-Gilloise parity from a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
Davy Klaassen had a hand in Les Unionistes’ second, illegally blocking a goal-bound shot on the line with his arms and receiving his marching orders before David tucked home the resulting penalty.
But Taylor’s winner provided the hosts with a fortunate escape, his spot-kick stemming from a more arguable handball call.
In Anderlecht, crowd trouble interrupted the first half of Fenerbahce’s 2-2 draw, but could not prevent the Turkish team going through 5-2 on aggregate.
Youssef En-Nesyri found the back of the net in the fourth minute before the contest was halted for a quarter of an hour due to disruption in the stands.
Luis Vazquez hit back twice for the hosts, but Yusuf Akcicek’s 63rd-minute effort was enough to see Jose Mourinho’s side safely through to the knockout stages proper.

Dybala double helps Roma edge Porto

Paulo Dybala's quick-fire double helped Roma to an incident-packed UEFA Europa League play-off win over Porto.
The Argentinian struck twice in the space of four first-half minutes to overhaul Samu Aghehowa's stunning overhead kick.
With the scores locked at 1-1 after the first leg, a tense second half boiled over when Stephen Eustaquio was sent off for lashing out at Leandro Paredes and Roma eventually pressed home their numerical advantage.
Paredes was criticised for his melodramatic reaction to the challenge, but undeterred Roma extended their lead with an 83rd-minute strike from Niccolo Pisilli.
In what would turn out to be one of the final actions of the tie, Devyne Rensch put into his own net as the topsy-turvy aggregate scoreline finished 4-3.
Roma could draw a mouth-watering city derby against Lazio in the last 16, with a tough test against Athletic Club the alternative for Claudio Ranieri's side.

Rovers suffer penalty heartbreak

Shamrock Rovers' European journey came to an end in Dublin, as Molde knocked out the League of Ireland side 5-4 on penalties.
After 16-year-old Michael Noonan had given Rovers a 1-0 lead from the first leg, Magnus Wolff Eikrem put the tie on an equal footing after 10 minutes of second-leg action.
An even 80 minutes followed, before Isak Amundsen saw red in the 93rd minute to boost Rovers' hopes of an extra-time moment of magic.
But Molde held on to send the match to penalties and Aaron Greene was the only player to fail to score, with Eirik Hestad finding the corner to send the Norwegians through.

Late Gala fightback not enough, PAOK frozen out

Galatasaray's 4-1 defeat away at AZ Alkmaar last week gave them a mountain to climb in the second leg and things went from bad to worse for Okan Buruk's charages.
Seiya Maikuma pushed the gap to four goals at the end of the first period and Denso Kasius' rocket put the nail in the Turkish side's coffin 10 minutes after the break.
Victor Osimhen replied immediately for the hosts and Hungarian dynamo Roland Sallai brought an unlikely comeback into the realms of possibility with 20 minutes to play.

But a 2-2 draw on the night was the only consolation for Galatasaray, something not even PAOK could draw comfort from on a frigid night in Bucharest.
The mercury was well below freezing in the Romanian capital and FCSB made sure of their progression with two goals in each half.
Holding a 2-1 lead from their first meeting, Juri Cisotti and David Miculescu both found the net to register a convincing 4-1 aggregate win.

Bodo/Glimt and Copenhagen triumph in extra time

Seven goals flew in between Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt and FC Twente on a dramatic night north of the Arctic Circle.
The Dutch side held a slim 2-1 advantage before the second leg and a Fredrik Sjovold own goal put them firmly in the driving seat.
But Kasper Hogh and a 92nd-minute own goal from Mees Hilgers rescued the tie for the hosts.
The drama was far from over, as first Brice Wembangomo struck in the 94th minute for the Norwegians and then Sem Steijn equalised barely two minutes later.
In extra time, Sondre Brunstad Fet put the home side in dreamland with his 111th-minute winner and a third own goal of the night, this time from Arno Verschueren, gave Bodo/Glimt a 5-2 victory.

Just the four goals settled Conference League matters in Germany, where Bundesliga strugglers FC Heidenheim were beaten 3-1 by FC Copenhagen.
The full-time score of 2-1 to the visitors was a mirror image of the first leg and Rodrigo Huescas was the hero for the Danish club in the 113th minute.

Panathinaikos leave it late, Jagiellonia and Celje through

There was late Conference League drama in Athens, as Panathinaikos overturned a 2-1 defeat to beat Iceland's Vikingur 3-2 on aggregate.
Ex-Leicester forward Tete struck in the fourth minute of injury time to send the 1971 Champions League finalists through to the next round, where they will face either Fiorentina or Rapid Vienna.
Left-back Filip Mladenovic had made the breakthrough earlier in the second half with an exquisite curled lob over Ingvar Jonsson in the Vikingur goal.
In the Cypriot capital, Slovenian champions Celje came away with a 2-0 win over APOEL to secure a 4-2 victory over both legs.
And Polish champions Jagiellonia Bialystok knocked out Serbian side Backa Topola, matching their first-leg result of 3-1 to ensure their spot in Friday's draw.

Real Sociedad and Plzen breeze into last 16

Real Sociedad and Viktoria Plzen won each of their Europa League second legs by three goals, with the former securing a thumping 7-3 aggregate win over Danish champions Mitdjylland, triumphing 5-2 on the night.
There was little danger of the La Liga side slipping out of the competition, once Mikel Oyarzabal's 73rd-minute penalty put the hosts 4-2 up on the night.
A first-half brace from Luka Sucic had built the foundations for the victory and an unfortunate red card for the visitors' Dani Silva in the second half all-but confirmed Midtjylland's elimination.
Plzen, meanwhile, had work to do to overturn a first-leg 1-0 deficit against Ferencvaros, but a trio of goals in the first half sent the Czech side through 3-1 on aggregate.

Pafos win battle of Cyprus, Borac and Betis ease through

There was everything to play for as Pafos hosted Cypriot rivals Omonoia in Limassol, with 1-1 the score from the first leg.
Former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic cancelled out Bruno Felipe's opener, but Jonathan Silva's winner with 25 minutes to play was enough to see the home side over the line.
Elsewhere, Englishman Archie Brown netted the only goal of the game as Real Betis confirmed their Conference League last-16 spot with a 3-1 aggregate win.
And Borac Banja Luka of Bosnia and Herzegovina held out for a 0-0 draw against Slovenian outfit Olimpija Ljubljana to progress 1-0 over the two legs.
