Steven Gerrard on Sven Ulreich: I've let it slip before
Steven Gerrard referenced his infamous slip against Chelsea after Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sven Ulreich made a similar mistake against Real Madrid.
Ulreich made a huge error shortly after the start of the second half, allowing Karim Benzema to tap into an empty net, for what would prove the winning goal overall, as Bayern lost 4-3 on aggregate.
The 29-year-old Ulreich replaced Manuel Neuer as he has struggled to recover from a metatarsal injury sustained last April. He appeared to change his mind when coming to collect a Corentin Tolisso backpass, initially coming with his hands before attempting a clearance with his feet, missing the ball completely.
Gerrard, on pundit duty for BT Sport, talked about making a similar mistake in 2014 against Chelsea, falling over as he looked to pass the ball in midfield, allowing Demba Ba to score, which many believe was the moment that cost Liverpool the title.
Gerrard said after the game:
'I've been there when you lose your footing at a vital moment, it's a cruel way to lose a football match. Neuer hammers that 70, 80 yards down field.'
