Leonid Slutski, CSKA coach: "It's not nice to recognise that there are teams who are just far more talented and at a different level. Our task is to ensure that the team plays to its absolute maximum capacity – but will this be enough? We will only know when the game gets under way."

Guardiola: "CSKA have a good coach and have almost the same [group of] players who were with them last season. They need to be respected no matter what, despite their result in Rome. They are very difficult opponents and we will respect them fully."

Bayern are without defender Holger Badstuber, and midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery, Thiago Alcantara and Javi Martinez. In-form CSKA striker Seydou Doumbia did not train all week after picking up a minor injury in their win over Lokomotiv Moscow last weekend, but is on the bench for his one. Home coach Leonid Slutsky will have to make do without midfielders Pontus Wernbloom and Alan Dzagoev who are both serving three-match European bans.

Bundesliga champions Bayern got their campaign off to a winning start, beating Manchester City 1-0 and will start the encounter with CSKA as overwhelming favourites, despite having a few injury problems. They are unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season, enjoying a 2-0 win against Cologne this weekend. Pep Guardiola's team spent the night in Cologne before leaving for Moscow on Sunday
