Patient play by United ends when Valencia loses out on the right. Neither team particularly pro-active so far.

Free-kick for Sociedad in a dangerous place on the right. However, De Gea easily claims the looping cross.

Giggs swings over the corner but it doesn't beat the first man.

Nice play by United - a combination of Kagawa, Evra and Rooney carve out a chance on the left side of the area, but the Japanese midfielder's shot is deflected wide for a corner.

Sociedad look for Griezmann down the left, but Smalling just gets there to cut the long pass out.

Valencia does well to reach the byline and squeeze a cross into the box, but Rooney can't get there. The ball then breaks to Giggs on the edge of the area, but his lay-off to Patrice Evra is too strong and it goes out for a goal-kick.

Kagawa cuts in from the left but loses a wrestle with Xabi Prieto, and the free-kick goes to the home side.

Valencia looks for a slipped pass through to Rooney, but it's overhit and Bravo collects.

Giggs swings the ball over and Bravo comes out to claim at the second attempt. Chris Smalling then vaguely bumps into him and he goes down, much to the chagrin of the crowd, but a brief talking to by the ref is enough and play continues.

Scrappy play thus far. Rooney is bundled over by Markel Bergara and United have a free-kick from deep on the right.

Antonio Valencia looks for a cross from the left but it can't find Hernandez. United's attack eventually fizzles to nothing.

Early incident - Javier Hernandnez accidentally catches Inigo Martinez with a flailing elbow. The defender seems OK though.

And we're off - United pass the ball straight back to David De Gea who launches it upfield.

There's quite a noise in the Anoeta. Manchester United are set to get us underway.

The teams are in the tunnel, accompanied by a mascot who looks taller than quite a few of the players.

This, by the way, is Ryan Giggs' 950th appearance for Manchester United. Species have been born and died in the 22 years since he made his debut.

"I'm the bad cop, and he's the bad, bad cop," said O'Neill about his partnership with Keane with Ireland.

And here's Jagoba Arrasate, Real Sociedad's coach: "If we do things right and get close to our game plan we can win. We have to try to play our normal game and take the initiative – if we can get close to doing what we want and do our jobs well, as we have been doing, I think we can get the better of United."

Here's what David Moyes had to say about United's opponents this evening: "I have a lot of respect for Sociedad, and we will have to play well on Tuesday if we are going to get those 10 points which will get us over the line. But we have got ourselves in a good position in the group and we have to try to maintain that."

La Real's main dangerman will be Antoine Griezmann, who has a mighty impressive six goals in his last four games.

Just going back to the United team, it's also worth noting the absence of Adnan Januzaj - there's no word on an injury and he isn't even on the bench, so we can assume that David Moyes has rested him ahead of the visit of Arsenal at the weekend.
