Off we go then in what should be a cracking contest between these two heavyweights.

Bayern Munich have won only one of their last six away games against English opposition in the Champions League (one draw, four defeats), that was against Arsenal in last season’s knockout stages. Manchester City are unbeaten at home against German opposition in Europe - three wins, two draws.

Joe Hart starts in goal for City. The England goalkeeper has played 35 games in Europe for his club with 13 of those coming in the Champions League.

Thomas Müller netted the winning goal against Wolfsburg at the weekend. He starts up front on his own. Mario Mandžukić is among the substitutes. Mario Götze suffered an ankle injury in the Super Cup loss to Chelsea, but takes his place on the bench.

Edin Džeko starts up front for City while David Silva is available for the first time since picking up a thigh injury at the end of August. He is on the bench. Sergio Agüero is also fit and starts for City having missed Saturday's loss to Aston Villa.

Micah Richards makes his first start of the season at right-back. Manuel Pellegrini believes the pace and power of Richards can be helpful in coping with the threat of Franck Ribéry wide right.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich have met once in the past. It was in the group stages of the 2011/12 Champions League. Both games were won 2-0 by the home side.

Pep Guardiola on his impressive record against Manuel Pellegrini: "That is not important. If I beat him all the time it is because I was the trainer of one of the best teams in the world. That's why sometimes it was easy for me. I'm really impressed with Manuel because I would like to be like him. No matter which team he is training, his teams always play the same way. His trademark in his team is always there. It's always a pleasure to play against Manuel because he loves to play football."

Manuel Pellegrini: "It's always better to play in the Champions League when you have won the Premier League game before but the team is playing with trust and confidence so I hope we can do a good match again next Wednesday. In general, I was very happy with the way we played. It is very difficult at this moment to improve with Bayern because they won the last three competitions but he will find a way because he is a very good manager."
