Lyon have pedigree in the UEFA Champions League. They have qualified for the knockout rounds for the last eight seasons. They went out to Real Madrid last season in the last 16, drawing 1-1 at home, before going down 3-0 in the Bernabeu.

Dinamo Zagreb coach Krunoslav Jurcic has fond memories of Lyon's home, Stade de Gerland. He was an unused substitute there in the 1998 FIFA World Cup quarter-final, when Croatia beat Germany 3-0. Croatia went on to finish third.

The visitors, Dinamo Zagreb are competing in the group stage for the first time in 12 years. They were last in France during 2007/08 in the UEFA Cup group stage contest with Stade Rennais FC, drawing 1-1.
