Two goals from record-chasing Raul and a superb Jose Manuel Jurado strike completed a comfortable night for the home side, before Itay Shechter's scrappy consolation momentarily silenced a rocking Veltins Arena.
Schalke made the perfect start, taking the lead after only three minutes. Real Madrid legend Raul firing into the bottom corner of Vincent Enyeama's net after a lovely dummy from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Eli Guttman's men, however, were undeterred by their early setback and enjoyed the majority of the possession as Schalke failed to build on their early lead.
Despite Hapoel's comfort on the ball, chances were few and far between for the away side and it was Schalke who should have made it two on 26 minutes. Jurado playing a delightful through ball to Huntelaar, who could only shoot straight at Enyeama from eight yards.
Schalke began the second half with greater purpose and laid siege to the Hapoel goal, Huntelaar hitting the bar twice in a frenetic 15-second spell after some questionable goalkeeping from Enyeama.
The home side finally added to their lead on 58 minutes. Raul grabbing his second of the night, side-footing home from six yards after lovely work from Huntelaar and substitute Ivan Rakitic. The Spaniard equalling Gerd MĂĽller's record of 68 goals in European competition in the process.
The outstanding Jurado made it three, 10 minutes later, curling a sublime effort in off Enyeama's left-hand post from 15 yards.
As the game fizzled out to its inevitable conclusion, Hapoel scored the goal their efforts deserved. The lively Shechter bundling home from six yards after a Salim Toama free-kick was missed by the home defence.
The result leaves Schalke second in Group B, three points behind Lyon, while Hapoel Tel Aviv remain bottom.
