Vincent Kompany has signed a new contract extension as Bayern Munich head coach that will see his deal at the Bundesliga champions run until the end of the 2028/29 season.
Kompany, who replaced Thomas Tuchel ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, originally put pen to paper on a contract until summer 2027.
The Belgian won the league title in his first season in charge, reclaiming the title from Bayer Leverkusen, and he added the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup courtesy of a 2-1 victory at VfB Stuttgart in August. Bayern currently sit top in the German top-flight with seven wins from seven matches.
Kompany's side host Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League league phase on Wednesday - available to watch live on TNT Sports and discovery+ - with the 39-year-old seeking to extend The Bavarians' 100% record after two victories.
Indeed, Bayern sit top of the current standings due to their superior goal difference, having beaten Chelsea and Pafos 3-1 and 5-1 respectively, and Kompany committing his future to the club ahead of facing his compatriots at Allianz Arena is further good news for the six-time European champions.
"It feels to me as if I’ve been here much longer already and that I understand the club well," Kompany said in a club statement.
"I am grateful, honoured and would like to thank FC Bayern for the trust they have placed in me and the working environment they have provided me with from day one.
"So far, it has been a great experience - we have started a wonderful journey. Let’s keep working hard and celebrate many more successes."
The decision comes at a key moment as Bayern look to build on their domestic dominance and make inroads in Europe. With the contract secured, Kompany has both the time and backing to implement his vision - grounded in defensive organisation, possession‑based attack, and the club's historic identity.
For Kompany, the extension offers longer‑term security at one of Europe’s elite clubs, enabling him to lay the foundations for sustained success rather than short‑term fixes.
Indeed, Kompany becomes Bayern's first coach to get a contract extension since Louis van Gaal in 2010. Before that, it was Ottmar Hitzfeld in 2003.
For Bayern, it represents a shift away from frequent managerial turnover and a recommitment to long‑term planning under a coach who has already delivered.
Bayern president Herbert  Hainer said: "The contract extension with Vincent Kompany is a strong vote of confidence from the club in recognition of his excellent work so far, and also a clear signal of continuity and stability at FC Bayern."
"Vincent Kompany is highly valued by the players, the club management and the fans. We are pleased to be extending our collaboration ahead of schedule."
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen added: "Vincent has brought the fun back to FC Bayern – and the spark has really caught on.
"Under his leadership, a real team has grown that plays dominant and attractive football. The extension is also a signal to our players. Moreover, I like Vincent's level-headedness. He never pushes himself into the limelight and makes our players better with his meticulous work."
