Bayern Munich and Portugal youngster Renato Sanches wins European Golden Boy award
Bayern Munich and Portugal star Renato Sanches capped off a special year by winning the 2016 European Golden Boy award.
The 19-year-old beat the likes of Marcus Rashford, Kingsley Coman and Dele Alli to the coveted award after an outstanding breakthrough year for club and country.
Sanches won Portugal’s Primeira Liga with Benfica before securing a big-money move to Bayern Munich which he then capped off with a starring role for Portugal as they won Euro 2016.
The midfielder broke some major records en route to winning the Euros with his country including becoming the youngest player to score in and win the competition.
Previous winners of the Golden Boy award include Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.
As well as Rashford, Coman and Alli, AC Milan’s 17-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Borussia Dortmund winger Ousmane Dembele and Manchester City’s Leroy Sane were other notable contenders.
