'It epitomises United this season' - Rio Ferdinand believes Andre Onana made 'big mistake' in loss to Bayern Munich

Andre Onana arrived at Man United this summer from Inter Milan to become Erik ten Hag's first choice goalkeeper, following David De Gea's departure. He started for the Red Devils in the 4-3 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich but gifted the home side an early goal, fumbling a shot, which Rio Ferdinand said "he should save" and "epitomises United this season."

Rio Ferdinand believes that Andre Onana’s fumble - that saw Manchester United concede the opening goal during their 4-3 Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich - “epitomises United's season”.
Leroy Sane played a smart one-two to Harry Kane to give himself enough space to hit a fiery low shot towards the Cameroonian shot-stopper, who couldn’t quite hang onto the ball with the shot trickled underneath him and into the goal as the Bavarian giants took the lead.
Bayern struck again four minutes later, with Jamal Musiala driving his way up the left side of the field, before pulling the ball back to find Serge Gnabry who doubled the home side’s lead with his left foot.
It was not the start that Erik ten Hag’s side needed, having lost three of their opening five Premier League matches this season. Ferdinand admitted that Onana should be doing better for Bayern’s first goal, and that the error was in keeping with United's poor start to the campaign.
"That just epitomises United this season," Ferdinand said of Onana's mistake after the match, live on TNT Sports.
"It's 14 goals in five games they've conceded now. They could make it more difficult for opponents to score goals.
"He knows it's a big mistake, he knows the pressure is on, that all eyes are on him, and he hasn't dealt with that big moment there.
“It’s a nightmare scenario for Onana. He’s confident as you like with his feet, we were sitting there saying ‘wow’ on a few of the passes, but as a goalkeeper you’re paid to come in and make saves and this is a great bit of skill from [Leroy] Sane to set it up well.

“But he doesn’t hit it with any real purpose. It’s not wide of him, it’s not in the corners. Onana, he should save this.
“This should be food and drink for him. He should be picking this up and then looking for his next pass. But it was a very, very bad mistake.”
The 27-year-old, who arrived at Old Trafford earlier this summer, urged his team-mates to “dream big” and claimed “better days will come” ahead of the match.
And United hit back after half-time, with Rasmus Hojlund scoring his first goal for the club receiving the ball from Marcus Rashford inside the Bayern penalty area, before striking the ball past Sven Ulreich in goal.

But their celebrations didn’t last long, with a VAR ruling that Christian Eriksen had handled the ball inside the penalty area, with referee Glenn Nyberg pointing to the spot.
Harry Kane stepped up to deliver the hammer blow and score his fifth goal for Bayern Munich in all competitions, to make the scores 3-1 after 53 minutes.
Paul Scholes, meanwhile also delivered his reaction to Onana’s mistake, insisting that United had played well in the first-half.
“He knows he’s made a big mistake and I also think there were other things wrong with the goal.
“Manchester United I actually think in the first-half played really well. But lapses in concentration and before you know, bang, bang, you’re 2-0 down.
“Look it’s a big mistake from him but he needs to recover, get over that and now concentrate.”
United rallied late on with Casemiro scrambling to pull one back, hitting the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal while lying on his back.
Matys Tel came off the bench to get a fourth for Bayern, but United's Brazilian midfielder struck another at the death to make the score 4-2 in a dramatic finish to the match.
