Senegal are going through the motions at the moment. They have lacked quality in the final third.

Mane does well to control a long ball over the top. Surrounded by yellow shirts, he tries to thread the eye of a needle with an ambitious pass to Ndiaye but it's well read and cut out by the goalkeeper.

That's the closest we have come to a goal. It would have been against the run of play, too.

Pote goes agonisingly close! The free-kick delivery is miscued but it's genius improvisation from the Benin midfielder to adjust his feet and flick the ball goalwards. It just drifts agonisingly wide!

Free-kick to Benin! Soukou draws a clumsy and needless foul from Kouyate on the edge of the penalty box. This is in a great position for a shot...

Benin's Souko pounces on a loose ball in midfield but his ambitious shot from 30 yards is never troubling the goalkeeper.

The game plan from Benin is very simple: to sit deep, frustrate Senegal and hit them on the counter-attack. It's a risky game and if they fall behind it will prove very difficult for them to get back into it.

Benin win another free-kick on the right flank and this time it's swung into the box. Gomis makes a mess of it, dropping the ball, but he's bailed out by the referee who spots a foul somewhere in the penalty area..

Sessegnon, on his 78th cap, wins Benin a free-kick on the counter-attack. Set-pieces probably represent their most likely avenue for a goal but they play this one short.

Senegal have had 72 per cent of possession so far - but have yet to register a shot on target.

Mane chases a long ball over the top - but he's never getting there. Becoming frustrated with the short ball game, Senegal are beginning to play more direct.

Frustration for Benin as the referee inadvertently intercepts Adeoti's forward pass.

Lots of possession from Senegal in the early stages - but Benin are proving difficult to break down.

Decent move! Mane plays a smart give-and-go with Balde, creating an opening for the Liverpool talisman at the near post but his shot is pushed behind by the Benin goalkeeper. The linesman's flag is then raised - wouldn't have counted.

Mane is through! But he's mistimed his run and is caught just offside. He's the target every time for Senegal.

Senegal force another corner, but again Saivet can't beat the defender at the near post.

The Senegal supporters are in party mood, generating a terrific atmosphere at the sparsely populated stadium here in Egypt's capital.

After some treatment, Pote gives the thumbs up and returns to action. Relief all around.

Ouch! Pote is clattered as he heads away a Senegal corner at the near post, immediately prompting the referee to stop the game so that the Benin midfielder can receive attention to this head injury.
