THE RACE AGAINST THE MELTING CLOCK
picture

It's a bit more interesting than it looks from the side view, but honestly, I'm not particularly impressed. A team TT should be 50k or thereabouts. But it is what it is, happening in the land of Dali, so hopefully some nice shots of the museum I visited on a sixth form art trip.

BEN TURNER: I DID WHAT I HAD TO DO
I don't know what to say to be honest. It's been a super crazy week. I wanted to come to the Vuelta but I've had issues with my leg a lot since the Giro and the team really believed in me. I went to Renewi and they said they needed me, so of course you say yeah. I'd do anything to race these races. It's just a crazy feeling. I was devastated in the first sprint when my chain came off but I really believed in myself today. I felt really good all day and... I don't know what to say, just thank you to the boys.
Such a good atmosphere at this race and they've been amazing, all of them. The last few weeks have been incredible, what all the boys did today. Kwiato, in Poland and here, all the results wouldn't have been without him. Today I just had the best guys around me and I did what I had to do. It came perfect. It was the perfect finish for me and I really believed in what I could do on it. The last hundred felt so long, though. Just amazing.

DAVID GAUDU IS THE NEW RACE LEADER!
That's what I'm seeing on the screen. He finished 25th, while Vingegaard crossed the line in 42nd, more than within the eight places the Dane would have needed to keep the jersey. I don't think he'll be as miffed as Gaudu will be delighted to wear the maillot rojo in tomorrow's team time trial.

STAGE 4 RESULTS
1. Ben Turner
2. Jasper Philipsen
3. Edward Planckaert
4. Ethan Vernon
5. Jenthe Biermans
Vernon may think he has a case for being blocked off by Turner but I think it was clean enough. If anything he put himself in trouble by going too far to the left and blocking himself in behind the Alpecin pair. I expect Philipsen will have something to say on the team bus later, that's as long as they open the door to it, which they didn't just now.

BEN TURNER WINS STAGE 4!
It's an upset but it's not a surprise. Brilliant from Turner, to finish off the assist by his team and deliver on the confidence shown in his by the Michal Kwiatkowski. He just had the power and the endurance to come through before the line and carry it across.

FLAMME ROUGE: EVERYONE SAFE AND SOUND WITH ONE CORNER TO COME
It's pinched and expanded, and all over the place. Choppy, says Sir Sean. Here comes Alpecin.

3KM TO GO: INEOS AND ARKEA LEADING TWO LINES
Either side of the road. Visma have backed off, but Groupama are still up there. Alpecin are leaving it late.

5KM TO GO: THE BUNCH HARING TOWARD THE FINALE
Over 50kph for the last ten minutes. It's a long safety today, which means a crash isn't catastrophic. Visma and Campenaerts especially doing a grand job of keeping their man clear of trouble today.

9.4KM TO GO: CRASH AT THE BACK OF THE BUNCH
And it looks like George Bennett, who crashed hard a few days, who has come off worst again, but he waves the doctor away, so he can't be hurting too much. No urgency for him to get back, he can afford to catch his breath.

10KM TO GO: ALL PRESENT AND CORRECT
Right to left from above it's Bahrain Victorious, UAE Emirates, Movistar, Lotto, Groupama FDJ, Lidl-Trek, Visma-Lease a Bike. Who's missing from that front row. That's right. Cucumber cool Alpecin-Deceuninck..

15KM TO GO: ARMIRAIL WAVES ADIEU TO THE FOLKS AT HOME
A nice little hit out for him, but he's caught, and we're a groupado, and on the way to a big bunch sprint.

Not a completely straight line but not onerously complicated either. The final K of the longest stage contains a kink and two corners, with one roundabout, so they'll need to be a bit careful, but I'm not envisioning a likely crash. They've just crossed the Isere river.

20KM TO GO: 40 SECONDS FOR ARMIRAIL
No dramas in the bunch, but the teams are in formation, and Alpecin-Deceuninck are being a little bit more careful. They don't want to have it all to do in the final few kilometres.

30KM TO GO: DECATHLON ROLL THE DICE
A good time to go for Bruno Armirail, who is 53 seconds back in the general classification, down in 42nd place.

32KM TO GO: PEDERSEN WINS THE BONUS SPRINT AT NOVEREY
It was a big ask for Gaudu to mix it with the true sprinters on the flat, but he had a look and was prepared to take advantage of any opporunity if it were to come his way. Which it didn't. Still made it into the top five, though, adding to his green jersey points.

40KM TO GO: THE LEAD TEAMS GETTING ORGANISED
Eight kilometres until the intermediate sprint. Coming, as it does, so close to the finish, I'm curious as to how committedly it's going to be contested. Will David Gaudu go for the bonus seconds. Groupama FDJ are at the front on the left, but Gaudu has Vingegaard on his wheel.

14:36
48KM TO GO: TOWARDS THE INTERMEDIATE SPRINT
And a nice little unclassified climb on the outskirts of Grenoble, from where there are a bunch of flights chartered later on. It's got to be tough on the legs after all this flat. Bit mean of them not to make it a category 4, at least. Fifteen seconds in hand when he reached it, he's about to be absorbed by the bunch.
14:27
55KM TO GO: SINHUE FERNANDEZ WITH 50 SECONDS
He's going very nicely for a solo rider, but if you think he's got a chance of going the distance... I've got a lovely French bridge to sell you. The peloton are looking perfectly relaxed as they roll alongside the Romanche river and they can bring back the young Spaniard, out of contract at the end of the season, any time they like.
